why can I not plot a route if fuel is not sufficient

Y ?

Icon is red and makes me plot many stars in between which is really impractical

You cant jump to some stars as your jump drive doesn't have the range, buy a better fsd.

Fuel is a separate problem, on the galaxy map, your plotted course will start as a thick orange line then turn dotted. You'll have to refuel before making the latter jumps.

If you are talking about plotting to systems really far away, wait for the galaxy map to plot routes, it takes time

The route plotting is non optimised first pass of what it should be. E.g. plot the selected route indefinetely with out of fuel indication.

the problem is the route plotter doesn't work like that, it calculates an entire sphere of possible routes that,

1. Takes ages to load

2. Gives you the impression that you can't route plot because you don't have enough fuel when actually you can perfectly route plot but it takes too long for the server to calculate all directions other than the system the player themselves wants to go to and has it selected.

(OP) Have you tried using the Fastest Route navigation settings to see if it helps?

yes, I can fly anywhere it is just broken, have fastest FSD just have to plot manually and fuel scoop in between.

but the starmap is a mess when I plot a route if should plot as far as it can, but still keep the end position stored so travel can be resumed when refuelled

When you select fastest route it takes a few minutes to plot all the routes out to the end of the bubble. If you plan on a long trip, you need to leave the map open for it to finish to allow the "plot route" button to become available (if you exit and re-enter the map, it starts the route plotting over again!). You can plot a route past your maximum fuel capacity (these are shown with dotted lines). This is different from maximum fuel usage. Each jump will be plotted at your current weight. So if you plot a route, then fill up with cargo, the course you plotted may no longer be possible (and you'll have to re-plot the route - wait for the lines to get drawn etc).

The max range of the route plotter is about 100 LY.

This is the correct answer.

It's surprising how many get confused by this. It's a bit bewildering to start with but trial and error quickly told me how it works.

Is this all in the manual? If not, it should be. This is a common topic - no one uses search.

The reason is that your FSD can jump only as far as the current total ship mass allows it without exceding the fuel jump limit. For example Sidewinder has something like 0.8 per jump, while Cobra has 2.0, but being heavier, also needs bigger FSD drive to have comparable range to Sidewinder.

So you can't blow your whole tank on one jump, even though your fuel would support it, instead you have to jump through many systems to reach your destination. Frontier calls it lore, I call it limiting and needless load of .

Wait for the little blue lines to propagate the galaxy, you then should be able to plot the route ok, might take 5 minutes or so for long distances.

I'd like to see the way the jumps propagate out changed so if you've selected a system that system takes priority for the lines to propagate towards.
