Why can't all station shipyards just sell everything?

Clearly the stations don't have an inventory of all these ships physically stored in the station. So, you're really just placing an order. So, why can't you order whatever ship or part you want?

Having to find stations that sell what you want doesn't add anything to the game. It's just a hassle.

I wanted to buy a Fer-de-Lance. I went to the shipyard in Gandii, they didn't have it. I went online and the suggestion was to go to "high tech" systems. I found a high tech system, docked at the station and no FDL. I went online again and found eddb.io. Found a station that sells FDLs and traveled there.

1. How are you supposed to find the ship you want without resorting to an external webpage?
2. Why can't you just buy what you want at any shipyard?

It's not really a shipyard anyway. It's a station where you place an order for a ship.

P.S. The shipyards don't properly display the ship hardpoints and compartments. It only lists installed components. You can't compare ships based on that. I had to leave the game and find a website.

First, I never use external sites and find equipment and ships just well. Find a high populated high tech station, check if they sell everything you need and place a bookmark. Shouldn't take you longer than 15 minutes to find everything you want just by playing the game.

Second, not giving everything to the player all the time is a normal part of game design. Just take a look at The Witcher where you can't buy everything from every merchant. Or literally any other game.

Third, no, I am not a fanboy. I just have a different opinion. This stuff exist. People disagreeing with each other. I don't say that because I want to defend the game, but because I think it's better for the game. It also doesn't mean I am against other information being available, I think some stuff would fit in there just well. (not directed to you OP)

Or without Elite rank go to i-sola prospect in Brestla (Planetary Base)
This station like Jamison has every ship and module BUT at a 25% premium

Yeah, it can be a pain. Once you level up to Elite rank (explorer, merchant, or combat), you can get anything you want at Jameson Memorial in the Shinrarta Dezhra system. It's a perk. There's even a 15% discount.

Otherwise, you need to use EDDB, like we all do: https://eddb.io/

Systems have a tech level. It's a hidden variable and is affected by the background simulation. Tech level affects the number of ships available in the shipyard and the availability of modules in the outfitters.

Gameplay design descision.

Presume its there to reflect how things might be in reality and how the BGS works. Not all systems have all commodities, modules, etc. Different systems have different things. Its a plus on the realism side, its a minus on the ease of play side.

I think a good compromise would be if you could search in game for modules/ships/etc. But barring that, i just use eedb.io. Prior to eddb.io, i just used to have a few favourite locations where i knew i could get most things from. One of my favourite shopping places (prior to getting Elite rank) was Mizar. Its a bit of a trek to the station, but its pretty great for outfitting and ships.

The realism argument isn't really so strong. Consider that you can order the transfer of modules you own from anywhere else in civilisation.

If I go to an outfitters that doesn't have a 6A Fuel Scoop, then:

1. If I own one somewhere else I can order it shipped in,
2. If I don't, absolutely no kind of deal is possible.

Realism would be that you can buy anything anywhere, but if the local outfitters/shipyard doesn't stock it, you pay the transfer cost to the nearest station that does and wait the appropriate amount of time.

Being unable to do that, and having to look around manually, is gameplay over realism, not realism over gameplay.

What about the other gameplay argument: Not giving the player everything at one spot. Like almost every other game does it as well?

Because having to think about where to go and buy some modules is part of gameplay.

There are many systems that have every module in the game.
Just not in one and the same station.

I agree, it would be cool if such a module ordering and shipping feature was in the game.
Having said that I am content with the way things are now.

Gameplay. Just like you need to destroy T6/T7/T9s to get your hands on chemical manipulators (or some other kind of chemical something, can't remember) that apparently every trade ship is fitted with but that isn't being manufactured and that nobody sells anywhere. It makes no sense whatsoever, but it has you going to different places and do different things instead of just pressing one button wherever you are.

(That said, I wish we could buy ships and scrap them for engineering parts rather than having to kill the people flying them for salvage.)

I like how it is. Seerms very realistic t me. Just because you can order a part doesn`t mean you can order it anywhere, even in real life. I`d say this is even more pronounced in space with light years between destinations.

They do this to give you something to do.

I always use external sites to get stuff.
They are great! [yesnod]

Or... pause for dramatic effect... Give us an ingame browser (The Secret World MMORPG does it). Use the mostly useless central panel (allow it to go full screen when required), then we can do all that other stuff whilst still in the game, Youtube, Netflix, Reddit, alien mystery threads, Lave radio, this place...

EDIT: I'm in VR - so alt tabbing not quite so easy for me.
