Ships Why can't I pick one ship and stick with it? A rant.

As some of you fine fellows here in Ship Discussion (AKA the best sub-forum) know, I have a tendency to make many posts, musing upon what ship I want to buy & focus on.

My brain is a bit broken. I have a real struggle deciding upon "goals". One moment I want this, the next I want that.

This is a real problem for me, both in-game and outside in the real world. And I get different ideas every few minutes. I wish I were kidding there.

You guys may have noticed I constantly switch between Cobras, Keelbacks, Type-9's, Haulers, heck even Sidewinders! I keep switching my interest between ships on a near constant basis.

I can never seem to decide which ship I want to focus on, which ship is my favourite. I don't have all that much time to play the game. That's why I will only ever be able to afford to keep & maintain one boat at any given moment.

The problem I suffer is that I can't decide which ship to get, and stick with it.

I suppose this thread sums up what this game does so well. The ship diversity is fantastic.

Unfortunately, that makes it difficult for me to choose.

Cobra, Mk III or Mk IV, or a Viper? Keelback, or Type-6?

Agh! My brain! I can't decide! Help! ;-;

I know exactly what you mean. On my second account I have a "one man, one ship" rule.

Go with the Cobra III and refit it for different purposes. Have a home base with a good selection of modules and use the storage to switch between fast smuggler, heavy retrieval, heavy fighter or passenger ship.

Oh man I understand all too well. I've been playing since it released a couple of years ago, I only ever stuck with the iCourier & FGS for any length of time and even then we're talking weeks, not months.

It was only back at the end of August that I decided I was going to gun it for the Anaconda. It's the ship I always wanted when I first saw the game, the big one, the luxury yacht that can do everything bar Outposts.

Now that I have the Conda I also have the budget to buy any other ship below it, though honestly I've only kept my starting Sidewinder & Viper Mk4.

But I have no desire to fly any other ship now, evne those in the hanger, I love my Anaconda.

So advice... Either accept that you want every ship, and do what you're doing, switch it up depending on what you want to do.

Or you can fly these ships and see if you fall in love with any of them. It depends on you, but all I can say is as I said at the start, I understand all too well, just don't be too angry with yourself! :)

Of the ships you posted there, I'd choose either the Viper Mk4 or the Keelback, but that's my personal preference, I prefer multi-role ships.

This is my store purchases since Sept :p

Perhaps take the approach of ruling out ships for technical (too slow/big/small..........) or ideological reasons (Empire too white ;)), one of the reasons I don't mind paying a bit extra for Beta access is the ability to try out large expensive ships and see if I like them (so far the Beluga is the only ship I'd consider) so if you remove the big 4 and empire ships it's just a matter of buying the rest and engineering them to suitable levels, easy ;)

I switch depending on what I want to do. Nothing wrong with that.
Currently I just parked my Vulture after doing a few basic engineer upgrades and testing them in combat, and now I mostly use my Python to collect more mats for further upgrading the Vulture's and also my Pythons thrusters.
Before that I have been doing a lot of bulk trading in my Cutter and I also spent two weeks in my Corvette to have a bit of fun with the new fighters.
I have not seen my FDL in a long time and it is pure vanilla. I am already considering which upgrades I will do first on it but that will have to wait for now.
I also have plans to buy a FAS or perhaps a Gunship. Not sure yet.
Oh and I also want to experience the Imperial Courier and the Diamondback....
and....
and...
and...

So much to do :).

There is only one solution:
Buy them all, multiple times if necessary!
Ah and don't do this ironman mode. This way, you can just switch to the ship where you are in the mood right now.
I for myself sit in a Cobra MK.IV at the moment 'cause she makes a lot of fun. At the moment....if i'm tomorrow in an other mood, i just switch to one of the other 27 ships in my hold. I regret nothing!!!!

My problem is that I can't bring myself to sell any ship that I've ever bought.
I tend to pick ships for specific role. Even the first ship I purchased, an Adder is now my taxi/shuttle complete with yellow paint job.
I'm not sure that having a ship like an Anaconda that is pretty damn good at everything really appeals to me.

A fully A rated G5 modded Python is still the best in game.

You can do it all with proper outfitting and storage.

You might also want an Orca for Luxury Passenger runs - and then you have EVERYTHING covered.

Best part is that both ships use the same Thrusters and FSD.

Python is best for normal Missions, Orca is best for Passengers.

That's about all you need right now.

EDIT: And yes - you've made twice as many posts in 2 months than I have in 2 years. Most impressive! (Best James Earl Jones voice.) ;)

I have a small fleet of eight ships, most of which have different purposes. The Anaconda is mainly for trading, the Federal Gunship is for reasonable combat, the Asp Explorer is for explorer (and is currently parked near one of the alien crash sites), and the Cobra MkIII is for smuggling. For my style of flying they all meet their tasks well.

Perhaps you are getting the true meaning of a multipurpose ship confused.

A multipurpose ship is a ship that can be used well in various different ways.

It does not mean it can do them all at once.

For that you need a multipurpose load out.

That is not so easy to achieve on most of the ships in this game.

The Python does it well. Here is mine, which means I have a multipurpose ship, with a true multipurpose load out.

https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/python?code=0pktkFflfdussf51f1f1f27270m030404B1ml05Cc39v62f2i27.Iw18eQ%3D%3D.IwBhrEGYZgWATEhY5riOQ%3D%3D%3D.H4sIAAAAAAAAA02QP08CQRDFhyPHnztluRPMkWAMeloZP4Sh4AvQWBhDQU2srCwtSWjstDAU1JR8BRJjhZ2FsSBWRi0UgeebxGR3i5c3%2B3uZnR1ZC89KJWpnRMI%2BZfMjFknrdMhYbuZZke0epfDqEXkOqq6B5JlSmS2B6llOZP89YChrQ%2FElL8zjN7B1wzJ5Y6hyUmLSY0%2F4NlnssVOwoGt06fbOARyM8iKHLU0WnJ4PC8Cc%2FgL%2BkY5bdNCxog6f8y%2BIdhIOhsBy%2F46fyI1XHLzp%2FfNa55Oh0Am9sDZDovj%2Bi3bDQRNFrR%2BiriJj0e6UX4savEyfdKd1OpSddQ1YJ1eUaEqe3mpIBTVn%2FjJ56ZqdQl1XpJKqAH%2FilRG8tQEAAA%3D%3D&bn=Stheno

I can do lots of types of missions in this ship, and do not have to keep changing my load out to do anything in particular. So pretty much whatever takes my mood. usually I just fly around doing various missions, picking up at each stop what looks interesting, from a passenger drop off, to a surface salvage, to a cargo drop or data run. I can take it exploring round the bubble(or further if I really want too, although I would possibly add one mining laser for that). rare runs - I can do that. a bit of light bounty hunting. yes that is possible. A true ship for all seasons.

What it is not is a dedicated trade ship/passenger ship/exploration ship/bounty hunter. But if I wanted that I would use something specific for that role.

There are other ships that can be fitted out this way, and some are really good at it. The Cobra MKIV I suspect can shine in this true multirole aspect with its abundance of slots.

The Federal Dropship is another that is great for this multirole style of play. That is what i used to get my Python. the advantage of that one is a lot of the parts can be moved straight to the Python when you upgrade (if I had had engineers then I would of been laughing).

The Asp explorer looks good on paper, but I suspect it suffers from too many smaller internal slots to allow a really good set up for this. Never liked that ones cockpit that much myself (just my point of view), so I have not done a lot in it to say one way or the other though.

There are a few reasonable cost large ships too that work for this, but then you hit large ship landing issues which cuts a few options of play down.

Note I have other ships, I have a cobra MkIII I take out for speed thrills sometimes, A keelback which I enjoy flying, but am struggling to work out what I really want to do in it, and a quite well engineered (I just do this slowly and when I feel like it) Anaconda. I also have some 40mill now sitting in the bank as I build up more ratings slowly so I can try the big fed and imperial twosome. (corvette and cutter).

Anaconda I like the feel of in it (it feels BIG), but find the steering horrible. It like a barge rather than a ship to me.

Also note there are certain things that really must have a dedicated ship in this game, and here is number one of those in my opinion:

Mining - Too much stuff required to try and fit it in on the side (I make it at least 4 slots and a mining laser)(I did try to do this in my Anna originally, and even that struggles to keep it ready and yet able to do other stuff well enough.

regards, John.

Oh, no, I get your point.

But choosing which multipurpose to buy & store parts for, for different jobs... That's what I struggle with.

I would then look at having different ships for different roles, and leave them set up.

This has the advantage of making you look to keep a "home" port, which is then great for building rapport with the local factions and then getting well paid jobs.

If you were thinking Lakon as a ship mark, and then looking at what you could do, I would suggest something like:

get a DBS. stick a bi weave, and two racks in the 3 slots, and a discovery scanner in the small slot. enjoy your self running as many missions as you can, to earn cash, and ratings with some local areas. you can do lots of things in a DBS when starting. after that add another more dedicated cheap ship to your fleet - A T6 and set it up for passenger hauls. This will get you the cash built up pretty quick for lots of small ship fun when you are in the mood for some jumping and evading gameplay.

It wont be long before you can afford that nice Asp.

This is one ship that excels for the passengers - The size 6 slot is what you want for a first class cabin. add a size 5 scoop and as much shields as you can muster. one rack, the rest can be whatever you like. Guns should not be used. Never try and fight with a passenger on board. EVER, it just is not worth it. You will then earn the money fast to buy one of every Lakon ship in the game, and set it how you wish.

Yeah, and Lakon looks like something I really want in my life, too.

Cobra, Mk III or Mk IV, or a Viper? Keelback, or Type-6?

Agh! My brain! I can't decide! Help! ;-;

Oh, I know the feeling. I've had a Sidewinder (obviously), Eagle, both Cobras, Adder, Hauler, Viper, Vulture, both Diamondbacks, and finally the Asp Explorer. So far, the Asp has stuck around the longest and has made me the happiest (primarily because of it's beautifully open cockpit). But, I'm quite sure that in the near future, when I've grown tired of exploring and want to get back into some bounty-hunting, I'll buy the Vulture again. And of course, since I bore easily, I'll be back into the Asp and exploring again.

I've yet to try my hand at trading (it sounds painfully tedious), but if I ever do, I'll be hopping back and fourth with the trading ships, too.

I have a lot of ships. Yes, the Keelback is my everyday beauty that I use for mostly anything, but I regularly switch to my other ships too. I rarely, if ever, change my outfitting on my ships once I've gotten them to a place I'm happy with. I might change in a cargo rack for a passenger cabin for an hour, but I don't do anything drastic like flipping from pure exploration to hardcore combat mode.

Python - Which I use as another (larger) general-use ship. I avoid combat zones in my Keelback but I'm willing to risk it in the Python, otherwise they do much of the same stuff.
Viper Mk IV - Although new to me, I really love this ship! It's my new combat zone beauty and she's also set up for short-range exploration and mission running.
Cobra Mk IV - My dedicated mining ship. Slow, not much fun. It mines.
Diamondback Explorer - No longer much of an explorer due to lack of internal space, but it makes a fantastic smuggling ship and discreet passenger transport!
Vulture - It sits in the hangar and looks mean? I don't know. I'm thinking about getting rid of it now that I have a Viper Mk IV.

I used to have an Asp as well but I got rid of it when I finally bought my Python. I find having a variety of ships gives me more options and more to do (and more engineering to grind :/).
I've been playing off and on since the game's release, but I'm not one of these players with billions of credits. I prefer the small ships since 10 million credits can get you into an A-rated everything if you choose, and you can really earn that much in a single evening (2-3 hours) if you're smart about it and dedicate yourself to the task. Once you have one good ship, it's easier to earn the money for more good ships!

My inability to choose a single ship is one of my favorite parts of the game.

Brilliantly said.

I share the general feeling. I have a lot of ships, but always return to my beloved Cobra Mk III and the Imperial Courier. Certainly not "the best", but this game isn't about always flying the biggest best ships.

Whatever, the ship hangar is one of the best features in this game. I remember Freelancer where you could only have one ship and could not swap between a frighter and fighter without selling the old ship for a big loss. I don't want to return to this.

Same here mate.

That's one of the reasons I reset my save to see if I could semi force myself to pick one ship. Now I'm planning all sorts of things with all sorts of ships!!! Can't help myself.

So far I'm taking it easy as I work out which ship I want. So far I feel the Keelback offers the most varied game play but I know I'll just have to get another Cobra MK IV so I'll probably end up back where I started with a Cobra and Keelback o_O

Was in the same boat when I started the game, I wanted the one ship. Gradually came to accept the fact that having a fleet of ships for different roles is by design, unless of course you only intend to focus on one thing.

Keelback man, if I reset my CMDR, that would be the first ship in my sight and would keep as the main ship while slowly building a fleet of more specialized ships.
