Why destroy a fellow player when there is zero gain?

I just lost a good 400.000cr (a lot for me) for no reason whatsoever. I was bounty hunting in Duwaredari when I noticed another player. I scanned him and he had no bounty and it looked like he was bounty hunting as well. I left him a federal dropship he was obviously targeting and went after another smaller craft. Both destroyed I started looking for other ships. I find another one (with the other player behind me) and start to engage when I get blown up by the other player. I had no bounty on me, no cargo and once he started shooting I was clearly running and trying to get into SC. Did he let up? No, he just had to blow me up.

Why? I would have gotten it if I had cargo, or a bounty or if I had been going after his kills, but I did nothing. Hope you enjoyed you pointless kill. I guess it's Solo mode for me after all... The money grind right now is bad enough as it is without having to worry to get blown to pieces for kicks and giggles by other players.

For some players, the game is about as much PvP combat as they can impose upon other players - regardless of challenge.

Psychological issues.
For example low esteem:

 • Floating hostility and general defensiveness and irritability without any proximate cause.[15]
 • Pessimism and a general negative outlook.[15]

Like it Arch.
I imagine my transporter with zero cargo would have been a big challenge for my assailant. Pitty he couldn't catch me.

Irrational acts performed by irrational minds. I sometimes wonder if PC kill bounties of 'clean' players should remain active until the murderer gets his own ass handed to him. No clearing that one off until you pay the vacuum price.

Usually I'll leave other players alone, unless I'm in a conflict zone. Then I'll make a beeline straight at you, not because I get some perverse pleasure out of blowing you up (not saying I don't, I love it :p), but because players are usually more dangerous than the AI.

Honing ones combat skills requires competition vs players. NPCs will never provide the equivalent behaviour and/or challenge that players provide.
The fact that not all encountered players in Open want PvP or compete directly doesn't take away from this.

Just because a reason is not apparent to you doesn't mean he had none. Maybe you killed something from a faction that he was trying to grow the influence of. Every time you kill a ship, the faction they're with loses influence.

I don't know what your problem is that you couldn't defend yourself and felt the need to run away instead. Is a player ship somehow scarier than an NPC one? You're happy killing mindless AI, why not try a challenge? He obviously gave you a good opportunity for it. Perhaps the point was to encourage you to try PVP, try fighting someone with functional synapses. Instead, you chose to flee, you chose to pull your claws and run away. That's your loss, and your problem, no one else's.

The players killing you like that would even kill you in a sidewinder. For them it's just about trying to make people suffer - and not about honing skills.
You gain no skill shooting someone out of the sky in a geared out vip/cob or even worse a python with a sneak attack while he is fighting an NPC.
.
Personally I'd suggest to everyone: just stick with SP (or dedicated groups) for the time being. Open play is a waste of time and just a big avoidable risk.
The only thing I can't really understand is why they dont make solo mode the default as their is no benefit in multiplayer. Just lag, bad performance, glitches and bugs and the usual griefers. Hardly anything positive to outweight it though.

People don't need a reason to kill you in a game. Sometimes all they want is to get a kill for giggles, which I must admit I'm sometimes guilty of it as well. Killing players provides much better thrills than hunting NPC.

You make a big assumption there about a lot of players mate, one that leads me to question your agenda. How do you know what their motives are? Are you a mind reader? Did you even read my post above? Let me reiterate - if someone's trying to increase the influence of a faction, and you're there blowing up ships of that faction, effectively working against them, they might want to stop you doing that. This is a good reason why solo mode shouldn't exist - why should you be able to work against me unfettered without me being able to do something to stop you? Arguments against solo mode aside, your baseless assumption about the motives of other players doing whatever they do are vexatiously insulting, and your attitude towards PVP is pathetic.

Search and join the private group MOBIUS. It's a big group where PvP is forbidden.

Someone telling me what I can and can't do in a video game within the legit game mechanics? Sounds overbearing to me. Think I might have to awox it at some point in the future though.... oh, you guys might not know what awoxing is yet. NVM, I'll show you some time.

Solo mode should exist, but it should be a separate character from open play toon. The same goes for private group.

Ah thats to bad for you... but on the other hand, the game wouldnt be realistic without this
people. It's a amazingly vast galaxy with all kinds of persons... some will shoot you for fun.

If you cant stand that ( from my point of view it would be no fun to play without the hazard of
getting blown up for nothing or at least nearly nothing ) go to solo and feel free to play
without any real harm in the galaxy... but whats the fun about that ?

I blew up one player for 400 cr once, as he was just running it was no real fun and I
didnt do it again... atm I would search for real pvp areas where you can have hard dogfights
with other players who love the challenge... until yet I just had one real dogfight with a friend
and THIS bast*ard blew me up :D But it was fun anyway.

@madfish : If you think open play is a waste of time you havent understood the game in my point of view.
If you go open and see the first pilot hitting a station due to a lack of flying skills youll understand how
much more fun it is. I also do greet other cmdrs if they are flying by and have a little chat or if I am
in the mood I follow them to the station and ask if they carry illegal goods or say I am coming over
for a cargo check :D

So atm there are no big interactions, but a galaxy without any real player is no fun for me, and with a
bit of fantasy you can have fun with other players also without shooting them for no reason.

kind regards
Kepnik
