Some things in life are a labour of love.
It doesn't matter about the journey, it's really about the end. I've done several projects in my time that people have asked "Hey Kicks, Why are you even doing that?", and my answer was "Because I want to". Back then, there was nothing much to come of it - but later in life, the lessons I learned were valuable. I am not saying that David Braben is doing this as a mistake, or a learning experience. You don't get an OBE by farting out franchises... That said, he wants this to be a success... He wants to reintroduce what he originally made, and make it available to a wide audience.
It's a tough one... Elite has never been a game to adhere to the plaster-cast we see these days. I see a lot of love it in it, and I know it can go places.
Some detractors have a good point, that the reviews on December 16th will focus on what is present, rather than what is to come. Such is the way games are reviewed currently. But it must be said that "X out of 10" reviews, that are static, will quickly have to change. I think that gaming sites need to update with the times, and realise that there is no release anymore.. there's just "Drop 1". I don't believe that this will obscure crappy games... I don't believe that game-sites will ignore Frontier's vision. This isn't "Guise of the Wolf", after all.
I think in the next few years we'll see initial reviews, and updated reviews. Is it a 6 now, or an 8?
It's a great time to be a gamer, and a great time to educate.
