Why did David Braben build this game?

He wanted his sanity back after developing Kinectimals with all it's cutesy cuddly child-friendly gameplay.

DBOBE: "Add into the game to let animal cubs attack and steal meat off other cubs"
Mike Evans: "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that. The children won't like it"
DBOBE: "Ok, the cubs can be constantly in danger of predators killing them"
Mike Evans: "Still can't. Microsoft Game Studios won't allow it"
DBOBE: "Screw this, let's make another Elite!"

Yes that is it.

He had a vision of the perfect game and now he's able to see it come through (great news for us) I play it all day and I love it, I sit there in my wheelchair and imagine I'm actually in space, I used to play eve, but in my opinion it's not got anything on elite dangerous, yes there are still problems but it's still gamma I have faith in frontier that it will be all sorted by the 16 dec.

I can't wait for the full release. Cheers commanders.

There has been a severe lack of games like Elite and Star Citizen for a long time and it's kind of sad that the only people spearheading campaigns to revive the genre are the those who created it in the first place. I thank both David Braben and Chris Roberts for doing their best to bring these games to life again, and will support them for as long as I can.

A few pints later (plus ED just crashed on me, boo), I got a thinkin'

Why do you think David Braben made this game?

Money? Prestige? Glory? Closure?

Is it because now he knows could realise the vision he had all those year ago when he was young, bright eyed and bushy tailed (not to say he isn't now of course).

Whatever his reason... I'm glad he did it

People frequently have many reasons for doing whatever they do. But if money is involved then I find it's usually the primary reason. And by quite a large margin at that.

Well he tried to build his own space ship, but that didn't work, so he had to settle for this game.

I wonder what would have happened if he kept going with the space ship...
