Why did you stop playing Elite?

If you are a lapsed player (like me) trying to get back into the game - why did you stop playing?
For me I played rabidly for months and then got a bit bored. I had the big ship and didn't really want to grind endlessly at unfun things with it. So I reset my save intended to play through again making different choices. IE I might be a pirate or something. I played for a few hours, got bored, logged out. And never got around to playing again.
I've kept an eye on developments but for the most part they were things you'd need to grind for (engineered or AX modules etc) and if I wanted a second job, i'd pick one that actually paid real money. Station rescue missions are the last thing I recall be interested in.
Also. ED requires quite a committment in time. Whilst you're logged out mission timers continue to run, so if like me you tend to get GBH of the ears after a few minutes of playing a video game (take the bins out, watch "College/musical/vampire crap", etc) then the format of a game which basically insists on your spending at least an hour a session on it doesn't work for me.
SO. I stopped playing it.

I haven't stopped. I take breaks for a few weeks then play for a week again or 2, then another break. I like many am waiting for the 2nd paid for expansion (I am an alpha backer so get it for free). So I guess to better answer your question I just take a couple week break and play again. Main reason the breaks, I want something new to do in game, I like what it has, just want more. So need a change for a bit them always come back.

I grew bored 🤷

I'm currently playing Space Engineers. I've been spending a lot of time welding, which reminds me of mining in ED but in reverse. The major difference is that I have a real sense of progress as I'm welding my ship together, something that mining in Elite never really gave me, despite both activities being "zen".

Though I guess I haven't totally quit Elite, seeing that I'm building a KRAIT in Space Engineers, and after that I want to build an Elite-like docking pad (minus the dumb record turntable). I may even build a full-blown orbital station someday!

I stopped playing about 7 months ago, because I am missing interesting challenges. Funnily enough I found the AX CZs pretty entertaining, they gave players some agency. Wanted to get more into PvP, but I could not stand the mechanics around Engineers any longer.
I am missing some actual MP content (PvP or PvE, anything!), some chained missions for Wings, dedicated PvP combat zones in cool locations, not just empty space. My fear is, the next big update will be in the same category as FCs are now, a bit tacked on, not adding very much to the core of the game.

Edit:
Tell me about it. I can't spent time in elite - but watching forensic highschool vampire princess girl musical 13 is apparently a great investment of our time.
Why are couples forcing themselves into this situation? How will this turn out in the long run?

1st break: frustration with changing game mechanics that screwed up how I enjoyed the game (I forget what now, but this tends to recur) 3 months, sometime mid 2017.
2nd break: see above. 3 months, early 2018.
3rd break: see above, 6 months, late 2018 into early 2019.

Now, one month and running, had been imagining what I'd do with a fleet carrier and got somewhat excited by the concept. The final announcement was disheartening--as the new vision looked, well, nothing like I was imagining. Once the first beta landed, toyed around with it for a bit, and decided it was a terrible, half-baked design, and it was the only thing I had been looking forward to as I'm kind of bored with the rest of the game. If they actually make the New Era interesting, I might be back next year.

I'm still playing, but started to mix other games in-between - before I'd boot up the PC and launch Elite no questions asked, now it's a bit more mixed. Feels more healthy tbh and keeps Elite itself fresh enough. Always nice to fly a spaceship.

He is asking certain people why they stopped playing and some feel need to post that they havent..... ???? i dont underatand people visiting thia forum.
I stopped playing because FC is another half baked feature. With lot of cut content once again.

Some leave the game running 24/7. I'm not like that, although if I'm in a wing I'll stay in the game while I make a coffee & won't be long.

There was nothing worth doing that I hadn't already done 500-1000 times...

All I ever wanted was more (flyable) ships, more weapons and places to fight... gas giants would've been a good start.

I have no more faith in FDEV, not for a long time.

Everytime I stop playing its ALWAYS because of the damn bindings. Why in the do my binding disappear when I unplug a wheel that has no bindings attached to it? WHY? It's such a stupid issue but it really es me off more than ANYTHING about this damn game I love playing it but it's not worth this just to use my bindings! It doesn't even work when I try to put in my back folder for my bindings no I have to PLUG IN A WHEEL THAT ISNT EVEN USED FOR THE ING GAME.
