Why Do CMDRs Have Damaged Ships

Hi all,
I keep seeing posts from fellow explorers, talking about damage and cracked canopies, while out in the black.

I was wondering where this damage was coming from? Overly enthusiastic scooping? Too many binaries being surfed? I only have about 20k LY under my belt (round trip total), so I acknowledge the I haven't seen a whole lot, but I've also never taken any damage.

Am I just lucky? Or do I need to swim more?

Not paying attention to what you are trying to scoop, finding hostile CMDR's out in the middle of nowhere, pressing the wrong button at the wrong time - all sorts of things :D

Another thing that can happen to you. Approach a gas giant from a wrong angle and you can wind up getting dropped out of SC by the rings you never saw. This emergency drop can cause canopy and module damage.

The phone ringing, the dog wanting to play.
One of my worst was at work during my lunch hour, when I stopped dead in space and went outside for a ciggy; when I came back all hell was breaking loose as I'd stopped too close to A neutron

The closest I ever came to getting killed out exploring was the time I thoughtlessly plugged my iPhone into my computer to charge it. iTunes slowly started lumbering its bloated mass into my system's memory, consuming all the RAM and CPU, while the USB driver loaded and blocked my other USB devices.. I had Elite up and was flying toward a star and of course I couldn't do anything, while I waited for Windows to wake up enough for me to background iTunes. By the time it was all over, I had suffered 40% hull damage.

"Only" 20000ly under your belt,, and no damage my friend, +1 to you ;-) exploring to me isnt about a number on a ships odometer,, just as well because mine is "only" around 45,000 at the mo,,
Im 10 days and around 15000ly out on my second long wander,, someone asked on a thread somewhere,, when are we at most risk,,,, if you think,, anytime your ship is near anything that can harm you, and give those encounters the attention they deserve ,, all good,,,most of the time lol,, safe travels always

Just leave the flightdeck unattended for a short trip to grab a coffee or answer a call (of anything). Less than a minute, in fact just a few seconds away, can be deadly.

Keep in mind everyone has different personalities and situations.

Some people have ADHD and are doing other things while we fly.

Some people have families or pets that distract them.

Some people get lucky and never fly into a binary/trinary in a bad spot.

Some people never bump the joystick when they get up to go to the bathroom.

Some people don't own cats.

Ouch!

God bless Apple :p

I always throttle to 0 when jumping systems - i was once jumped into a black hole system & was 'emergency stopped' as soon as i entered the system.

Also not seeing a ring system & hitting it edge on or even worse, being affected by Sol evening though you're 15k LYs away from it!

I once couldn't see a massive ring system & smacked into it full on, all due to the sunlight reflecting off my laptop screen when playing on a sunny day.

THis time I tried to see what I can turn off, didn't realize you need thrusters in SC.

Last time happened because the star's "heat range" was pimped and so now I can only spool the FTL a few seconds later. Didn't pay attention, so it overheated a little. Then there was a bug, which was fixed almost right away, where ship's controls would not be responsible when entering a system - and the throttle had not been set to 0.

All in all, the damage is minor. More psychological.

Ah yes, the old space saw of doom phenomenon. Only had it once, and it was in civilized space - nasty when it happens.

Most of my problems have been because of the "I know I'm tired and it's late but let's do just one more jump" syndrome.
That and thinking I can fly just as well after a drink or three....
I have had the cat try and "help" me by sitting on the keyboard but so far that's not caused anything I couldn't handle.

I rarely get any damage but most of the time it's lack of focus. Only ecountered one jump to the wrong 'side' of a dangerous binary system so far and one time I got stuck in the loading screen of the system map for about half a minute and crashed into a planet. :D
