Why do Empire Corporations ban Tobacco?

Tobacco is generally legal in the Empire.

Apart from, it seems, the Corporate controlled stations. When did this happen? Does it make sense?

My understanding is that it's also generally frowned upon in the empire. I guess a company decided to outright ban it.

Interesting observation.

Perhaps to mimic real life.

On my office campus, most of the corporations around will ban smoking on all their property. They will even ban it several hundred yards from a building, its outside for heaven's sake!

Really, it is all about reducing insurance premiums :D

Tobacco is always illegal on corporate stations AFAIK. Personal weapons are legal however - even on federal corporate stations.

As for the explanation, I think it is considered disruptive to local productivity, and that why trade in it is forbidden. Or, maybe it is just because the large corporations want to keep a tighter grip on their trade.

They don't want the slaves to die too young, an owner wants their slave to be able to do as much work as possible for as long as possible rather than having to spend money on cancer care therefore banning tobacco is sensible. If a person fell on hard times and had to put themselves into slavery they wouldn't be considered by any employer if they had a habit to support.

...so what? The empire supports slavery.

Good point. So, one system fears illness while another system fears oppression. To each system their own fear. The op wasn't wondering about slavery which is wrong because it makes a person a slave to another person. The op was wondering about tobacco which is also wrong because it makes a person a slave to a drug. A slave by any other name is still a slave.

as someone who chokes from nearby smoke just because you are outside doesn't mean those that don't want to inhale the smoke won't have to step outside. My university for example is broken into multiple buildings so that usually means leaving one building and walking to another building back when we had a ban based on distance I walked the around the perimeter, as of last year though now its simply a straight-up ban so I don't have to worry.

It's because they have been stupid/arrogant enough to sign up to TTIP.

If you are in Europe do some research, and then write to your MP - as TTIP is all about secrecy and is a bad deal for all (excepting the facele$$ multinational$ who lobby for it).

Sorry to break the glass spell of these forums with a shard of reality, but this IS very important and cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.

For those in the UK, TTIP could destroy the NHS and you wouldn't be allowed to know, as the secrecy is inherent.

Do people still get cancer in the 34th century?
People in the Federation, probably not considering the average citizen's age. People in the Empire, probably depends on how much money they have. Nobles will have access to near Fed tech while pleebs will make due with what they can scrounge. Slaves and clones on the other hand are replaced by the ton when they wear out.

Clones are illegal absolutely everywhere.

Except the Empire.

The Empire is less technologically dependent than the Federation, choosing to keep and employ slaves for the work which machines would usually perform in other parts of the universe. The Empire is ]a proponent of human cloning, a topic which the other factions find abhorrent and have officially banned within their own jurisdictions.

Empire economy runs on slaves and clones, Federation economy runs on robots and AIs.

I used to smoke, but now I vape with an electronic one.

Perhaps the corporations controlling the new devices do not want people going elsewhere for their nicotine fixes.
