General / Off-Topic Why do female athletes compete in their panties?

We need pictures, I don't understand what we are talking about :p

Oh god, oh god!

Trying to be clever so I just tried to Google some pictures of blokes in panties to post..

Did not think that through....

Y......
No pictures have been posted, and now we're talking about science.

I expected nothing less.

I was really worried that my serious question might have produced all sorts of salacious nonsense so big thanks to everyone for "keeping it clean".

So apart from "ratings / increasing audience" (i.e. encouraging the prurient voyeurism of males) I see no argument for the skimpiness. I can understand high-jumpers and pole-vaulters not wanting loose clothing to catch-the-bar (if that would cause an issue) but the idea that a woman should "show her knickers" to be accepted / get sponsorship is daft.

Don't get me wrong, I am a normal male but for example I don't go to watch netball even though it is my favourite spectator sport after handball because I don't want to be thought-of as a "perv" watching women racing around in very short skirts.

In my opinion people are in general too serious :D

I work with many elite female athletes who love showing off their hard earned bodies in skimpy outfits.
Shopping for the season's cutest kit is a pastime in itself.

There's a psycho-social performance benefit for athletes perceiving themselves as looking a certain way.
Its similar to amateur cyclists buying aero parts.

To extend your comment on what to watch and how skimpy it should be:

Personally I usually don't watch sports where this occurs (there's not much left to look at when you put on a full racing fire suit and crash helmet and strap into an automobile etc.).

However I constantly ask myself what is the point of the super-mini skirts and dresses worn by female tennis players? They don't actually cover much and leave anything to one's imagination.

After long, deep consideration, and a quick spot of research (Checking out Alison Stokke pics), I have come to the conclusion that it's because men think fit chicks look hot.

What is it with women's legs that attract men? Per an advertisement getting us to buy a product tall and skinny seems to be the most attractive per a car or a shaving razor. Are we hoping to get a glance above those legs? We all know what is there and it pretty much looks the same for every woman except for teenagers wondering to see it for the first time. Has advertising taken over our male conception of the perfect woman who is tall, thin with a great chest? History for the last 3000 years says a full figured woman could have a better chance of bringing a child into the world long before hospitals and drugs came into being. Maybe we should look for love and not care so much about what an advertising company wants to sell us. It is more about looking into each others eyes meeting a great looking body at a nightclub versus a lifetime taking care of each other. Just one opinion. So much for athletes in panties.

NAH!

I've worked at the Ironman world championships a bunch of times.
On the Thursday before the race there is an organized underpants run through town.

As an international event, you have athletes with very different senses of what is appropriate to wear, or not, in public.
The run was started to make fun of and address that awkwardness between cultures, so on that day everyone runs in their skivvies!
"Kona underpants run" will return appropriate google image results.
