Why do I ......

… feel a little guilty when grinding for Imperial rank I do it in a Corvette?

… feel a little guilty accepting missions from both warring factions at my station, I shouldn't be so mercenary!

… feel a little concerned that I am 100% allied with every faction in my home station, what am I, the ultimate fence sitter :(

… feel a little stupid when know I am fitting too many limpets for the task at hand but know if I don't I will convince myself I have to ration them - sigh

… feel really embarrassed when I realise why I can't boost is because I still have my cargo scoop open

… feel kind of sad when some low ranking, insignificant NPC keeps hassling me in a Res, I don't want to have to destroy them but sometimes it is the only way to get rid of them!

That one is because of the near-complete absence of negative actions reliabily available to take against factions. At a bare minimum, we need a criminal mission board (preferably accessible under anonymous protocols only) where, just like we have ready access to a mission board which reliably offers missions to support a chosen faction with positive effects, we need a mission board which reliably offers missions which target (those same) factions, offered up by anonymous contacts.

Right now, it's just Elite: Best Friends, where the current reliable negative actions you can take are:
  • Murderhobo
  • Deliberately fail missions (not abandon them, literally take some and wait for the timer to expire)
  • Deliberately trade for a loss
  • Trade on a black market owned by a non-anarchy, if you're lucky enough for that to be the case.

Agree there need to more asymetric missions not everything needs to be +1 side a -1 side b, you should be able to put a spanner in someone's works without it implicitly helping their opposition

Damn this was suppose to be a light hearted, slightly humorous thread and we have got all heavy and introspective :D

Both of you are right, it is easier to gain rep than lose it. If I take missions, especially massacre type ones, from two warring factions then I should lose way more rep than I gain yet it is the exact opposite. I would love it if actions had realistic consequences, that you had to think about what might happen before deciding to take a mission or perform some task. At present there is no downside to anything and I think there needs to be one.

Well, if you want me to pull it back on topic, I was going to post this before :p

Agreed. On a similar note I suggested something along similar lines a while back now.

Good suggestion, and as usual in this forum, totally ignored !

My opinion is that FD missed the target by a country mile. Each and every one of us should be able to align ourselves formally with a faction in the game. And have that faction displayed when scanned. It could have been beneficial, as you gain reputation with the faction, doing their bidding, you are given missions that only someone who is part of that faction can get. And it could even be expanded - like you get interdicted in your system and instead of the System Security coming to your add, a bunch of NPCs from your faction drop in to help out one of their brotherhood. And conversely, if you do something against your faction, you suffer the consequences, loss of reputation, even expulsion from the faction if action is that severe.

Given FD already track rep (somewhere) surely that metric could used to flavour your interactions more not just on the mission board but within the factions 'local' space and also their opposing factions' zone of influence. Having to detour round "blue elephant" systems because they have beef with "green monkey" and Im currently matey with the monkeys would be very annoying fun and probably make me rethink taking some jobs

The game seems to be loaded with negative waves for you.

You should play another game.

:D
