why do mission times keep going after loggin off

ok so after i log off of elite and log back on say the next day or a few hours later the missions have ended because the timer keeps going why dont your mission pause while your offline its not like you could complete them offline anyway ?

Because it is a realtime multiplayer game. Just because you log off, it doesn't mean that others have to stop as well.
After saying that, I do understand that your mission should be put on hold while you do real life tasks and you can carry on from where you left off but take the extreme situation where you accept a mission to take food to a starving system that has a blockade due to unrest, on the way there you discover that a real life emergency has occurred meaning that you save the game and want to return to complete the task but for whatever reason, you can't return for over a year and in that time, the pervasive universe has resolved the unrest and the blockade has disappeared and the system is now healthy and flourishing , now should you be given credit for completing your task of delivering food to the system even though it no longer needs it or should it come up as overdue?

Galactic time ticks on, whether you're there or not - it's a multiplayer thing. <grins> Ninja'd!

missions do not grand you that much time for this to happen this way.
you sooner get a fine for failing the mission.

adding to time , even the planets have moved when you log back in.

a note , when you pause your not gone from the game.
you can be destroyed mean wile.

Right but im on a private server with only me and a friend and he wasnt online so it has no reason to keep running until one of us comes back that just putting extra stress on the servers that noone will notice since we wont be there. I agree if i was on open multiplayer then what you said makes total sense.

So you are in a Private Group? Well, the game world is *cough* universal, thereby linked to everybody else playing. You will just only meet your friend and no other player.

Time therefore grinds on, unstoppable. We even warp space in SC mode, so the effect of going faster the light is negated.

Your only chance is to go in close orbit to a black hole, and come out a few thousand years later to claim... what? Oh yes, the world has still moved on even if your time slows down.

Your game will keep being linked to the general game, and as suggested by others, that would lead to anachronisms if we each had individual clocks and time lines.

Just be glad Spock don't pop round with a time machine and some news from the future.

You are not necessarily on a "private server". You play in a group, but everything that is done by other player still affects your little pocket universe as well. The only difference it whether or not you are visible to other player or not. But you still share the server and things in it.

Edit: and spanked by sysmon

Wow, you have access to a private server? I think you need to play offline if you don't want game time to keep going when you exit the game ;-)

I believe that even in offline mode, the game is still synched to the online servers, and time might grind on.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

Don't even try Eve online then... :D

Solo, Private Group, and Open Play is all part of online universe, and you can switch your character between these modes. So if you take on mission in on of these modes, it will have real time completion - if has deadline for 4 hours, it will expire after 4 hours, despite of your online status.

Truly offline mode will be for single player only.

Keep in mind that when delivery missions expire, the cargo becomes marked as stolen. To avoid this, either don't load up on delivery missions when you know you might need to get off soon, or favor other missions that don't give you goods to transport (such as "get us x good from anywhere" or courier missions). Those should fail without consequence, except perhaps rep, as we don't have much visibility into that system yet.
