Why do my guns fire sporadically?

I must be missing something. I have a gimballed burst laser and multicannon on a Viper. I've got the laser on primary and the cannon on secondary. There's power available (I think, usage is 84%). But they only fire sporadically at targets. For every 5 seconds I hold down the triggers, I only get about a second of firing time with both weapons, spread out randomly. I had the same weapon setup on my Eagle and that worked fine. Any ideas?

If you have then in the lower gun slots then they will only fire if they can clear the nose. Also check the power you have available and make sure 4 pips to weapons.

I suspect you don't have a great power distributor and power supply is weak.

Weapons mounted under the ship won't fire when the enemy is above the horizon-line... they'd be hitting your ship.

Also, multicannons sometimes have to reload ammo.

All of what sbdags and Amorelia said is possible yes. Try to keep at least 2 pips in weapons when in a good firing position.

tl;dr put more pips in weapons and upgrade your power distributor

long version: your weapons have a heatsink,if they overheat it then they have to stop firing to cooldown. this is where your weapons energy goes in the power distributor - the power consumption in Modules does not matter for this purpose.

you can be sure this is the case if the beam weapon has a bar next to it that's depleted and the cannon is flashing 'thermal overload'.

Thanks everyone, I'll experiment with line-of-fire. The difference between the nose of the viper and the eagle might be what's throwing me. It's definitely not a heat issue.
