why do people buy armor and reinforcements?

why do people bulk up with mil grade armor and internal bulkhead reinforcements when someone can just pop your powerplant? *shrugs*

It has been noted by the devs that they have recognised this as an issue, so fingers crossed these items will be meaningful in the future!

Better question would be why given you can buy higher grade armor and internal bulkhead reinforcements players still can just pop your powerplant just as easily as if you had stock set up *shrugs*..

yeah, this is why i outfitted my conda with ridiculous shield strength with SCBs because i know when my shield gets popped my powerplant is going next and no amount of armour is going to help... its kinda weird really, defeats the purpose of armour upgrades and internal reinforcements for anything bigger than a vulture

?? Is this a serious question? Most people play against NPCs and NPCs don't target powerplants. Plus, targetting powerplants isn't always done in the heat of battle. My Drop Ship was an unstoppable tank in any fight against small or large NPC ships. I had no cargo- just shield cells, and hull reinforcements.

I buy military grade hull sometimes since it helps a lot when ramming / getting rammed. I don't put it on my Anaconda since the price is way too high for that small benefit, but for some of the smaller ships it definately helps and doesn't cost that much.

well i suppose in PvE it wouldnt be an issue...

I put armored bulk heads and hull renforcers on stealth ships because silent running makes it very unlikely that anyone will be able to reliably land hits on any particular subsystem.

For more conventional setups, I focus on not getting near enough to anyone to get shot at, or making sure my shields don't fail.

Because it's not as useless as it seems:

- When you aren't very close to your enemy, he is very unlikely to hit your powerplant reliably
- If you enable silent running, it's even more unlikely
- Armor protects against collision damage, should your opponent decide to ram you
- Last but not least: Many commanders forget to aim for you PP in the heat of the battle

Probably because they prefer to fight against the A.I. and currently the A.I. does not constantly target the powerplant.

is enabling silent running during battle a Klingon battle doctrine or something? wouldnt that overheat your ship like mad?

Well if you disable your shield generator too it's not too bad, as you won't need it at that point
-
Also from certain angles like a frontal on frontal fight with one reversing and the other CMDR going forwards, it becomes very hard to hit the power plant on certain types of ships, don't believe me? Take on an elite NPC anaconda in a frontal attack and you'll see you do hardly any damage to the power plant

I think he's talking more about coolrunning ships, designed from the start to run without shields, have added armour and usually projectile weapons. Silent running can be used also, but a heatsink is gonna be required equipment.

I buy armor because NPC's don't, as yet, target subsystems. It affords me enough time to run, if/when my shields go down.

Helps with ramming, certain types of alloys will reduce damage from certain types of weapons, and if you hull/stealth tank it's kind of necessary.

Agree with Axelsson on small ships and OP on large ships.

I use armour upgrades on my Eagle because when the shields go down which doesn't take much, the hull won't last long while running away!

I don't bother on my Anaconda or FDL because when the shields go down its time to leave! Repair costs are high and ship rebuy is too expensive to risk it. Plus I don't want the extra mass.

Because armour and hull mods SHOULD make sense and protect modules.

On smaller ships reflective hull is both cheap and useful as the MAJORITY of primary weapons on a ship are beams, and many larger ships seldom use ballistics or such on small vessels.

NPCs dont deliberately aim at PP
nor have I died to PP loss in PvP in my many many defeats

oh I should add I fly small ships so all with military grade and hull reinforvement in the Viper
so cost isnt an issue
