why do people buy armor and reinforcements?

I buy military grade hull sometimes since it helps a lot when ramming / getting rammed. I don't put it on my Anaconda since the price is way too high for that small benefit, but for some of the smaller ships it definately helps and doesn't cost that much.

Me too. My Vulture often gets hit when fighting in CZs and the armour is very handy if it happens when the shields are low.

Becasue some people have a lot of money, and its safer than putting it in a bank. Until we get the 10% module reduction of course.

Because armour and hull mods SHOULD make sense and protect modules.

On smaller ships reflective hull is both cheap and useful as the MAJORITY of primary weapons on a ship are beams, and many larger ships seldom use ballistics or such on small vessels.

You have the option to buy B grade Power Plants, and other modules. They are more armored than A grade. It's another choice, just like pulse or beam.

I was piloting a Dropship for some time. I had a couple of armor plates inside and about 1000 armor plus 300-400 MJ of shields, works pretty well with a SCB in PvP because most people are using pulse lasers which are not that harmful to my hull. FDLs are a nice enemy but still, I'd say the Dropship (armored) is equal to a FDL.

2 reasons for me:

Against NPC it helps, as they do not target PP

Against Players it helps when ramming or when you are being rammed - player Python pilots do seem to like ramming

As it has been said earlier, that the devs are looking at targetting of PP. I think they mentioned that there will still be a chance of destruction if it reaches 0%, but generally it will cause power lose instead - so much less chance of an insta kill

military armor helps vs collisions, in a head to head collision without armor you insta explode after impact, even if you had some shields on. This is especially bad with FDL, even cobras can ram kill you.

Not the point.

Regardless of module version the very idea that you mount critical components on the OUTSIDE of the armour is .

The current system means that ARMOUR protects HULL and depending on how much hull you have a certain amount of damage is reduced or INCREASED towards modules.

But to even be able to TARGET a powerplant directly through armour plating and bulkheads is stupid and easily blow up ships. Even with a B module it's far to easy to blow up a PP than the ship itself.

One suggestion floating around is that Gimbal weapons should not be able to pinpoint modules which sounds fairly reasonable.

You trade damage potential for accuracy.
