Ship Builds & Load Outs Why do rail guns stop at class 2

It depends on your ship and its heat management for an Eagle, yes the larger would turn your own ship into slag. But for Pythons, FLDs and Condas they can manage heat better and should able to fire a larger rail gun. The limiting factor should be heat though. Any ship shouldnt be able to fire their salvo of lasers along with their railgun it should be the rail takes up a large power pull or heat build so the rail user has to stop shooting his other weapons before firing his rails.

something like that should cook even the new Fed corvette or the new imperial design...... but yea that would be sweet..... *whispers* turreted rails.

I guess a possible explanation of why there's not bigger rails available might be that given they are hyper-velocity projectiles... things that need to travel that fast have an upper size limit. Also (as suggested by Shadowjester above) they could generate too much heat for ships to handle.
Of course if they ever do have bigger rail guns then I'll be in the queue to try one :)

I am new to forums and neglected to quote the comment by sp0q above my own where he was talking about multi railguns. IRL there are a few ways to displace heat even in vaccums to at least offset the generated heat temporarily. Thinking about it from a real life stand point its odd that railguns are not more advanced in game as they are pretty basic tech just like the multi cannons and the bigger cannons. The game has us firing balls of "Plasma" you'd think that the tech would support something as simple as throwing mass at high speeds.

Actually. I think it'd just because they'd be overpowered.

The virtue is that they're excellent for hitting modules. Which is why they're only fixed - it's too easy with gimbals.
