You're in a pressurized hull, with mechanical, chemical and digital equipment contained therein. You hear your weapon's discharging capacitors, , the burning of fuel, and that God-awful sound of air escaping from that hairline crack in the molding of a ship that should have been decommissioned long ago. The explosions you "hear" are shockwaves of expanding gas that violently escape when you or another ship blow up buffeting the hull, which then causes more of those aforementioned hairline cracks.
In other words, we're flying tin cans barely held together by duct tape, hence the name Elite: Dangerous.
