Newcomer / Intro Why do the federal security service (almost always) attack me?

Hi all. Love the game,... just wish I didn't keep losing any money I make through bounty hunting...

So, after dying for the umpteenth time, launching, and going to Nav Beacon, start waiting for wanted ship to fly about, go near to a Federal Security Service ship - message flashes up, something like 'Cease all activity, bla bla', he shoots and kills me again... BOOM

This is after I hadn't fired a shot, especially anywhere near a FSS ship! Its also happened lots of other times... Every time I go to this Nav Beacon, bang - dead again.

Sorry for first post - I did a quick check to see if this is a repeated post somewhere. I've also checked the 'Contacts' part in the station - and cant see anything like bounties on me, etc.

Sorry if this is a stupid question!

Check your status on the right hand side of the HUD, sounds like you are wanted. You could also look at your transactions tab (left side, second tab) and if that shows you have a bounty in your current system then you are wanted. That will also tell you how long the bounty will last, if it says "on H-jump" then it will clear when you jump to another system.

Also check your right-HUD --> STATUS tab --> REPUTATION right panel and scroll down to make sure you are not 'Unfriendly' or 'Hostile' to any superpower/system factions.

That's not enough. The station contacts will only show you bounties that you can pay at that station. You will likely have received bounties elsewhere.

Hi guys
Thanks for info - I actually just restarted the character... Only lost around 4hrs (unproductive hours!)
I'm now past where I was anyway - there was a slight delay in my posting, as it was my first post. This game truly embodies the word 'epic'!! (Still playing on solo)
I'll just chalk it up as experience - and use this post to double check all the statuses if I get nailed again. Just bought my first new ship!!!!

Most ships will fly alright with toilet seat up. [big grin]

I guess almost every commander will know this - fly a mission, arrive at target system, target station is 200,000 LS away, set course, time for a toilet break, sit down, hear interdiction sound...

Not something that I would recommend in a ship with zero gravity.

(Just in case you are about to ask the obvious: we have magnetic boots.)

This is why you need to play on a ruggedized laptop with waterproofed controllers, that way you can be seated in the bathroom with your beverage flask alongside along with a Tupperware snack container and play without interruption.

Note I do not play this way myself.

AAaahhhh its happening again. Is it something to do with when the Federal ships scan me? It seems they scan me, then immediately engage and destroy... sucks...

As has been said, look to see if you have "wanted" or "hostile" written in red above your fuel and tempsig gauges in your HUD. If you have been naughty in that system then you will be "wanted" - if you have signed up in powerpants to an opposing faction then you will be "hostile" - wanted will bring the feds / security / bh down on you , hostile will make the opposing faction enforcers come gunning.

If you are looking to make money from bounty-hunting then you must really make absolutely sure that your target info panel shows the target as Wanted or Lawless before you fire on them otherwise you get a bounty on you (even if they are a big bad pirate baddy).

Are you carrying illegal goods?

I seem to recall if you have a legacy fine or legacy bounty and then get caught doing something wrong then even if what you were doing was only a fine the legacy stuff is made active and you get a bounty and everyone shoots at you.
