Why do you explore?

I've been doing a bit of forum wandering and after reading the Dangerous Discussions forum there is so much hate for exploring.

"Boring! Honk, jump, honk, jump!" Blah blah blah!

Now while I very aware that everyone would like more content for their own particular game style etc It still seems to me that the exploration forum (this one) is one of the most active and friendly one's here.

So what keeps you going out into the black?

For me I just like wandering around and see what the galaxy throws at me. Driving a canyon, watching the sunrise over a planetary ring etc.

cheers o7

The fear of coming back and having to work on engineers, think I'm ready for another 8 month trip into the void after this round with engineering :O

Everything in ed is repeatable it's all monotonous if you think about it

While I would certainly enjoy if basic exploration gameplay was improved, it is still the beauty of the gaalxy and the joy of sharing discoveries that makes me go back out there :)

these days mainly to visit real galaxy stars in E: D.

i love to read on something in some astronomy blog or journal or podcast, get various designations from some cross-reference catalogue, and search for the object in the galaxy map ... and then to fly there. sometimes it includes complicated route plotting, sometimes i get some great screenies, sometimes i find something on the way... mainly supergiants since over a year, but also star clusters, o-class stars... but yeah, it's the real galaxy which keeps me exploring ingame.

currently on my way from EV scuti to HT Sagittae, got sidetracked by a star cluster, with PW2010 designations ... reading up on it at the moment!

I like flying my space ship. I love seeing what I'm going to find next and the views never get old.

But mostly it's an intangible thing, I just loves it and I can't really explain why.

So what keeps you going out into the black?

I love exploring in most video games that I play, especially space games. I also love real life astronomy. Because Elite Dangerous has a virtual Milky Way to roam around in it is tremendously appealing to me as an explorer, conceptually at least. I've spend most of my time with Elite exploring deep space, doing things like:

  • Searching for Earth like worlds
  • Hunting interesting systems
  • Trying to break 3rd party Cartography records
  • Sightseeing and taking scenic screenshots
  • Driving around on planet surfaces for the fun of it
  • Searching for geysers (gave up on this, far too time consuming due to no tools to help)
  • Attempting to get out on the fringe as far as possible, or as high / low on the galactic plane as possible

Basically, I make my own goals and then fly out to try to complete them. This is also the problem though and why I've not been doing much exploring lately, because there isn't much "game" to exploration in Elite, and needing to use my imagination to enjoy the game has worn thin on me. You'll notice that most of what kept me going out into the black isn't actually part of the game, there aren't any game mechanics to support or enable any of it from a gameplay point of view. I'm basically playing Elite the same way I do Space Engine: fly around and look for pretty things.

Which, is better than nothing I guess. I'll be taking a break from the game if S3 doesn't give some substantial love for exploration, and maybe the break itself is what I really need, but when Frontier does eventually get around to developing exploration I'll eagerly head back out there again. Because I want to explore, but I also want something worthwhile, something fun, to do while I'm out there too.

I recently became interested in Exploration and I just like visiting locations that are rarely seen by other players and even more so discovering places no one has ever been.

So what keeps you going out into the black?

What keeps me going back out is after returning to the bubble my first encounter with a human player in weeks is being interdicted and him destroying my unarmed “Exploanda”. Yes, my data was lost but it’s my fault for swinging through Quince after a detour to La Superba. Not complaining, I know playing in open is a risk but it’s nice returning to see other players after weeks in the black -- It would be cool though if people were less “pew~ pew~ Die unarmed exploration vessel!”

Atleast I got this neat screenshot! He can't take that with my data.

Greetings from La Superba, 900LS out. Yes, I like landing my SRV on the nose of my ship.

There's a whole Milky Way galaxy including our local Nebulae, clusters and stars. That's why I explore. If there was no Elite, I'd be playing No Man's Sky but dreaming of Space Engine (my computer wont run it).

Do what no one else has done, go where no one else has gone, see what no one else has seen.

And, frankly, would you rather write your story on the great canvas of the galaxy - or the postage stamp we call the Bubble?

Taking selfies... erm, I mean screenshots, in interesting places where nobody has before me. It is more like hiking in an uninhabited mountain range with a map, a GPS module and a camera.

I also like to drive my SRV, to find POI's far away from the Bubble and to imagine a story behind each of them.

I enjoy the peaceful exploration away from wars, pirates, powerplay and whatnot. It helps me relax after a hard day's work.

Exploration is merely a byproduct of mine antisocial personality that wants to play a multiplayer game without other players interference. And only place where you can fly alone is out of the bubble. I just wish I had faster ship so I could go farther.

It really help if you have an interest in astrology, cosmology the scientology of it all to enjoy exploration.
I personally spend a lot of time exploring to find the extremes of things. Be it stars, planets or just systems.
Yes, it would be great if we'd get more things to explore. They've really not added any real content since 1.0 (if we don't count landing on the planets). But I think, it's still possible to find things to obsessively hunt in all corners of the galaxy.
