I recently switched careers. I used to be an explorer that dabbled in PowerPlay. I'd find people to friend in-game and jump in to see what was happening. The fuel capacity and jump range make it so easy to get to where the action was. If there wasn't any action, those abilities made it much easier for me to fortify distant control systems than for someone else with a smaller jump range.
In combat the DB Explorer is slow. But the large weapon hardpoint made it useful, particularly in Combat Zones (or their PP equivalents). You can use a DB Explorer to be an effective remora to someone in a bigger ship. If you're not being focused on, use medium lasers on enemy shields, or large cannon on enemy powerplant. If you are being focused on, then you're drawing fire from your ally. Evade and recover. If a smaller ship is harassing your ally, they're a sitting duck for your cannon. If a smaller ship is harassing you, then at least they're not harassing your ally.
I was having a blast with it. But eventually I got tired of that style of gameplay. I switched to piracy in a Cobra Mk III. Early days yet, but I've found the change to be highly refreshing.
I still miss that jump range and fuel capacity though. Remembering to refuel in my Cobra is a pain... And the Cobra actually has a halfway decent jump range. I think I'd go mad in a Vulture.
