Why does fuel run out so fast?

I came back to the game this month after a 3 month break and now I find that the fuel for most ships run out super quick. Its very annoying to stop for fuel during trips.

Is there a way to buy better rating fuel tanks or lower fuel usage?

You can buy extra fuel tanks. Or, I don't know, maybe a fuel scoop so you don't have to stop to refuel.

but can you buy better rating fuel tanks or na?

The better the FSD the less fuel it uses for the same jump. Eg an A5 FSD will use less fuel to jump 5LY than a D3. Assuming the same ship of course.

I wanted to kit out for trading on the side also.

Is a class 2 rank a fuel scoop good for a clipper?
No, unless you don't mind waiting three and a half minutes to fill up the tank. Even a class 4 will take 45 seconds, though little and often is the way to do it.

But if you're trading on long routes, why not just dial the route plotting slider back a little? It might take you an extra jump or two, but the shorter jumps are much more economical. It's a square law: if you drop your average jump distance by 30%, you'll use 50% less fuel.

Maybe higher grade fuel or something? Lol

Yeah...but that would mean that the fuel itself had a higher rating...not the actual fuel tank. :p

We can of course start talking about how a different type of fuel would maybe require a different form of fuel tank for storage and maybe a different type of power plant to process it, but that's something different...;)

Perhaps the higher-rated fuel tank has fewer holes for the fuel to leak out of...

If you are thinking of adding extra tanks keep in mind that the fuel cost for a jump scales in proportion to the total mass of the ship hull plus components plus cargo plus fuel so you will use more fuel to carry the extra fuel along with you. Insert your own Xzibit image here. Since each FSD has a cap on per-jump fuel usage your jump range will also be reduced and you will need to make more jumps to reach your destination.

That doesn't mean that fuel tanks are useless, though. They do save time scooping or docking to refuel, and sometime there are areas of space - even in civilised space - where scooping isn't possible.

Plus with fuel tanks and a fuel transferrer limpet controller you could be a Fuel Rat. Or fuel cat.
