Why does landing gear slow your ship down?

Yup the whole ship slowing down after using boost is un-realistic BUT, who would really want it realistic? where a person can just keep boosting away at a ridiculous speed.
When you boost you create a <space bubble> that after the boost is done suck you back to normal speed.
Also, it is very clear that a <space bubble> is created when you lower your landing gear, and thus suck your speed back even further- since you now didn't boost before hand. :)
.
Feel free to use any <Star Trek - Tech talk> within the brackets.

I always thought it was just so you can manoeuvre more accurately onto landing pads.

Yes and you can assign key bindings that only activate with landing gear down. Personally, I replace fire 1 and fire 2 with forward thrust and reverse thrust. Ensures I don't start shooting up a station and gives me controls I only use when landing.

I always thought the computer slowed the ship down to prevent catastrophic damage to the landing gear in case of a collision, preventing the ship from being able to dock effectively. Same with the cargo scoop. It's just a 'safety measure'.

This is especially useful for those of us who remember accidentally hitting boost inside stations and becoming one with the walls before this mechanic was implemented!

I still sometimes happen to boost into the wall as I do not deploy the landing gear before I land on the pad- since lowering your landing gear slows you down.

I just watched a 20min powering up tutorial for "Rogue System" just to be able to move the boat! I can live with a lil unrealistic! lol

I believe the common term for this was 'kersploding' (exploding and kersplatting at the same time)

Ah .. happened to me ALL to often (thankfully mostly back in the beta days though!)

Because it's been programmed that way by FD.

Btw - you can answer any movie-related question that way too: Why did XYZ happen? Because it said so in the script.

Because we had loads of players complaining they'd crashed and lost all their money so FD caved in and made landing easier, now it's a pain in the butt because the gear comes down slowly.

If you can actually use your eyes and your brain and want to come in fast you have to time it dead on so it locks down just as you hit the pad if you do it to early you end up crawling along.

yea its a "safety" feature.

Isn't there air in the space stations so that would create drag ?
I'm sure my oxygen replenishes as soon as I enter space stations when I got cracked windscreen.

Doesn't replenish until you touch down. When you come in you are breathing station air.

way back in beta landing gear had no effect and there were wails from people who accidentally boosted when landing or shoved the throttle a little too hard. As a result the landing gear restriction on speed was put in.
:
Think of it like the pit lane limiters in F1

If the OP had witnessed the carnage of beta when the walls of the stations were painted red with the blood of rookie pilots the question might not have been raised.

It was not a pretty sight

I think of it as a reprogramming of the flight computers. Gear down means limiters engaged.

Fair enough. Anyone got a screenshot of the devastation?
