Newcomer / Intro Why does my kill warrant scanner not work?

I've assigned my KWS to the second column labelled '2'. I'm not sure what the significance of the orange 1 or the blue 2 is but I've tried it on both colours.
I just targeted a wanted npc to try out the KWS and nothing happens. I realise that you have to press the secondary fire button and keep it down but I just can't work out what I'm doing wrong. Is there something else I'm meant to do?
 
If you put it in a different column, this means a totally different firegroup. You would need to switch to that firegroup and use 2ndary trigger in your description above.... target and keep it held (and targetted) for say 8 secs until it says completed. You would then switch back to Firegroup 1 for your normal weapons.

Alternatively, if your in the initial Sidey and have both lazers assigned to trigger 1 (of Firegroup 1) then in the SAME COLUMN assign the KWS a number 2, and your 2ndary trigger will activate the KWS, your primary trigger the lazers. (and get rid of column 2!)

If you look at the control options, you'll see which key you need to press if you scroll down the list. Not the most elegant solution but that's what I do when I'm scratching my head...

Edited to add: Then when you've worked out how to "fire" it - bear in mind it needs to be aimed at a target at fairly close range, for several seconds, to take effect.

No problem, it's in place as some bigger ships have more hardpoints than triggers, and some weapons you'll use rarely (eg torpedos at 15,000cr)

For example with the Eagle I settled on;

Firegroup 1 - trigger one = lazer, trigger two = cannon (firefight)
Firegroup 2 - trigger one = KWS, trigger two = discovery module (explorer)
Firegroup 3 - trigger one = lazer, trigger two = torpedo/missile (hits the fan mode)

FYI, you can assign everything to say trigger 1, so it'll fire all your weapons and the KWS at the same time, but this is flawed as you need to complete a KWS first before firing any shots at the target, so ignore those 'helpful' CMDRs.

Many have asked for a trigger three function so no doubt it'll come for those with such eventually.
