Why does the Discovery Scanner blare?

I think it's meant to be a sound accompanying some sort of hyper-light scanning pulse. The sound itself isn't the pulse, of course, it's just an auditory indication.

Caught me off guard the first time I heard it - I thought a Martian tripod machine had sneaked up behind me :)

I initially thought I would hate when it got introduced, but with the new silencer effect it's even better than before. Sometimes I'll thump the system just to hear it.

Personally i LOVE the sound it makes, the audio just a second before completely fades out allowing all your hearing might to focus in on the throaty BBBRRAAAAWWHHPP as a pulse is sent out into the surrounding system.

You don't always know who else is listening though :)

Not so fond of it myself as it also silences the other music / effects so it's more "dramatic" ... Would have preferred a more sonar type noise but hey ho!

I don't mind the sound itself, but not so keen on it silencing everything else either.
I actually reported it as a bug :p

I get what they intended (I think) but it doesn't quite cut it, it just makes all the other annoying little sounds IRL around me more prominent.

The thump gives you a sense of accomplishing something. If it just made a little static sound it would be just a bore!. I do wish when you scan planets and stars there would be a wire frame like scanner that you can physically see around the star or planet. that would exploring even more awesome!
