Why does the Discovery Scanner blare?

When the discovery scanner is charged a pulse is released that travels in all directions and is returned if a stellar body reflects it, a form of hyper-sonar.
 
To add to this, if you watch your radar you can actually watch the propagation of the scan across the field of your radar screen. To agree with all..the sound is awesome..never change it...it is made all the more righteous when you get a return of:

it would be great to see a ripple effect starting from your ship and going off in all directions when you make a scan.. something subtle, like a water ripple, or a light colored pulse effect...

i mean your scanning a whole solar system here people! Give me some epic visual to go with the epic sound!:)

During the war...

It reminds me of the times sitting on the sea bed and being hammered by a destroyers ASDIC just before the depth charges dropped. Ah, fond memories.
 
I wish I was convinced that people were being sarcastic... it's a bloody awful noise! I'd turn it off if I could...
