Engineers Why does the FSD now have auto adjustment?

Is there a special reason behind the autoadjusting to the centre of the jump destination? The only thing I noticed that now when I fly in the bubble the next target in route is always obstructed by the star.

I am divided between bug and feature here, as I always wondered why it is not that way if I go in a straight route. I guess the different angles to the destination at jump had the next route target in different angles too but now this is always obstructed. Might not be a big issue exploring but traveling in the bubble this might get annoying due to the extended time between jumps.

The jump auto-align and destination alignment are two different things aren't they?

I don't mind the auto align for jump since it is basically just eye-candy as far as I can see.

The fact that your actual destination is now supposed to always be on the far side of the arrival star seems just perverse to me. I can only see this being useful if you are on a long trip and fuel-scooping each hop.

The reason for your destination being more or less always behind the star is because now they actually calculate where you should enter the system and at which angle based upon the last system you were in's location, hence when traveling it straight line it will have the effect of always having the destination on the far side. It is not a bug, but a new feature.

With interesting and persistent consequences, too. Because if you find a particuarly dangerous angle to jump into a star system with a neutron star or white dwarf or binary system, it should stay that way every time you make that jump in that way from that angle.

Which is cool.

For exploration it's handy, too, since you're set up to scoop before moving onward. instead of having to flip around half the time.

In the past your entry point was random. Now its fixed: if you approach a system from another specific system, you'll always come out at the same end. This automatically means the destination is on the other side, if you're plotting a straight line.

Yep, I have no problem with either.

I like the fact that you emerge at the star with the proper alignment, rather than getting turned around randomly all the time.

It also means pirates can 'haunt' the local emergence points when they know heavy traffic is passing between nearby stars where the jump routes would be the same each time.

I'm loving this feature. I really like how it aligns when you start to jump. Before it got my OCD going if i hadn't aligned perfectly.

The alignment is now much more logical - dropping in on the side you arrived and leaving on the other side when travelling in a straight line. Fuel scooping is now much easier because you know that you travel half way round the star before jumping forward, which gives a more predictable time for scooping.

Totally agree with you guys! These were GREAT improvements over the previous behaviors and is really helpful if you are flying one of the less agile ships out there such as a T9 or an Anaconda with a build focused more on jump range than maneuverability.

This now logical alignment with the next star on the route was also a detail that I never expected FD to ever address.

In fact, all of these types of changes found in 2.2 came as a complete surprise to me, since I always assumed FD never sweated details like this that many of US notice. I was very glad to be wrong in that regard. :D [up]

So that when the destination star appears in the display it looks like it is coming at you from the correct place. Apparently it is difficult to program a star coming at you from off-center.

Feature.

It looked weird before. You could be 10% off the course, which would mean missing the target by lightears.

Did someone say 'LightEar'?
