Why does the game install to AppData folder?

I'm new to PC gaming and was assuming that the game was installing into the same folder that the launcher was. I found out through trial and error last night that it is installing to C:. I put in a one terrabyte drive for games on D: and now I've run out of space on C: because of the base game and now trying to do the Alpha on top. My AppData folder is 68 gigs....all because of Elite.

Any ideas on a workaround? or why does FDev do it this way?

IIRC Epic install is a totally separate one, so you probably have two E: D installs of 30 gigs each on your drive.
Strange. I did install E: D from scratch a bit over year ago, when I finally caved in and moved from W7 to W10. Which in my case meant format C: & install everything from scratch. I got E: D to install where I wanted it to install, using standalone.
IIRC the procedure went about like this:
-Created a forlder where I wanted to have the bulk of E: D files (some go to AppData, no matter what, but the space they need is minuscule).
-Downloaded the EliteDangerous-Client-Installer.exe to that folder and ran it from there (IIRC as admin).
-Now I don't remember if I was asked at this point where I want the Launcher to be installed or not - if I was, I selected the same folder.
-However the previous part went, folder EDLaunch appeared in my designated E: D folder.
-At this point I answered no to the guestion if I wanted to run the Launcher.
-Ran Launcher from its folder (IIRC as admin), again I don't remember if I was asked where I want the install to go or not - probably not.
-E: D got installed under the Launcher folder (new subfolder: Products and in there elite-dangerous-64.

You can definitely choose where Epic puts the folder and files, mine is on G. But I can't remember exactly how atm, but I seem to remember it was fairly obvious when I installed.

And I was using the standalone launcher for my first copy (before changing it to Steam) and I was able to choose that install folder as well.

If it comes to you, I would love to know....as I've tried it several times and can't seem to figure it out.
