Why does the plague of the rudimentary exclamation mark persist?

Now I've been pointing this placeholder out since original release (4 years ago), and I do realise that many have grown accustomed to it, and accept it without question.

But seriously. Can anyone from FD give a legitimate reason for this non-sensical image and its use?

  • If it is to portray an unknown, then it should for all intents and purposes be a question mark.
  • But it's used for CZs which are known quantities.
  • And as the image above shows, it's used to portray known installations, even present in the instance.

Aside from lazy design, what is the reason for this non-sensical reuse of a rudimentary image left over from the original development stage?

Oh, the exclamation mark that annoys me isn't that one, it's the one next to my power usage bar under the modules tab even when I'm not over 100% usage.

Not my picture, the game's down for patching so I stole from the interwebs:

On UK road signs, a ! signifies a miscellaneous hazard, ie one that there is no specific hazard sign for. It's basically saying use caution..
This is probably what FDev were going for.

Yeah, it's kinda signifying "be alert!". It's use as an icon is very familiar from road signs and warning labels, I have no qualms with it in any of these contexts. I know to some ner... er, people it's associated with missing textures in game editors but to the majority of players it has so much association.

That warning is telling you everything will not be fine if a power plant malfunction occurs. Some priority adjustments need to be made so you won't lose critical systems. Or get a better power plant that can handle malfunctions.

By that logic FD should just go back to using that icon for every single instance, like they did before initial release, as all instances can contain miscellaneous hazard.

And how can the reticule know what it is, but not the imager? Even in SuperCruise? If it's an installation, and the reticule knows it, use the installation image on the imager. Not some basic design of an exclamation mark from original beta.
And FD needs to pull their socks up while they're at it, and start making proper images for all the different instances in the game. It's lazy QC I tell you. Nothing more.

You may find a proliferation of them among your bindings in Control Setup. They are spreading like Thargoids !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! < here's a few more

I'm aware of that, like I said - it's not my image but I get this on some ships even when Thrusters and PD are the only things in group 1 (~30% of the total power plant). There's an archived bug report I submitted somewhere but can't be bothered to dig it out.

On the plus side, they may well have fixed this now. I noticed last night that my 91% power usage actually didn't run to the end of the 100% output bar, and there was no exclamation mark. Only took them four years! \o/
