Why doesn't FD store carry ship models?

It feels natural to me to expand the franchise into this area and I suppose a wide audience would appreciate it. The models can be pre-built or assemble kits, plastic or metal. How many of you CMDRs would love to have your hands on a full-metal Cobra or FDL with your own custom paint job on it?:D With Clipper these are my top 3 wishes.

Ohh I would LOVE to buy a ship model, especially an assembly kit so I can build my own. If FD doesn't sell them, is there anywhere I can get them?

Someone 3D printed a model ripped from the game, and it turned out pretty sweet. There are services that you can send a 3D model file to and they'll mail you a printed copy, so you could probably do that in lieu of any official ship merch.

would love a full ABS kit of a Python.. and probably after i have that, ill buy the rest. COUNT ME IN!
allready have some skill from doing gunpla

I'm sure FD is well aware of this demand for models of any kind. Pretty sure absolutely nothing has been addressed regarding it. Instead, we have people resorting to hacking the game data files and pulling the digital ship models and then exporting them to formats that 3d printers can use and distributing them under the table on reddit and such. You can see some very nice quality 3d prints of all the models if you do a bit of googling.

I dont know, maybe they hate money and that's why they've yet to release a paint job for the anaconda as well as models and such.

I'm sure there was a response a while back to a similar thread (somewhere, I can't find it now though!) stating that the marketing department were aware of the requests for ship models in the store and would investigate possibilities for the future. Although I may have dreamed it

I think that i vaguely remember this as well, like someone said F.D must hate money because there is so much more that they could sell, I would like a poster for my man cave but cant seem to find one, or some sort of large canvas print. Come on F.D pull your finger out.

But seriously, who would buy a 3d model of my Asp?

Hmmm....it all depends I guess....

I am under the impression that the damage model currently is holding them back as even the elite decals don't match up with the armor after its damaged so its not going to be on their priority list any time soon. Just damage the back portions where the decals on the sides go. You will notice they float to where the original skin of the craft used to be.

My Current Merchandising needs....

MODELS - of the various ships like that Tank game does, but the attractive humanoid kind would do too.
A range of Stellar Plushies
A UA Plushie that lights up, Honks and purrs if squeezed or shaken
Braben branded Gaming Glasses.
Elite pants (English Version)
Lego models of the Ships and stations
Elite memo book from Moleskine
Elite iPhone case

to begin with

As a 35 yr scale modeller I can tell you there is a gent called Alfred Wong in America who does prototyping for model kits on commission - he has also been employed by a few movie companies to make prototypes for films.

What I mean by prototyping is he scratchbuilds a model, according to a given design, then cuts it up in a way so that the pieces can be used to make moulds for a limited production run - these are normally called "garage" kits, and as I said production is usually limited, but there are companies that produce many hundreds of these very limited market kits.

If FDev contacted the communities that do this sort of thing it would be a simple matter to get kits produced in limited numbers.

Scale modelling - PROPER scale modelling not the rubbish ppl half made then put back in box as a child, is a serious industry and enthusiasts will willingly pay hundreds of pounds for the right kits.

I would absolutely be interested if Frontier started making scale models of some of their spacecraft available for order in the store. I'd put up a shelf in my bedroom to display such things, in fact.

what about a replica of each ship with weapon models to be attached on their respective hardpoints? Customizing loadouts like that would be fun!
