Why has VRWorks (Simultaneous Multi-Projection, Multi-Res Shading) never been implemented?

With the fact that the 1060 has become the most common GPU (per STEAM hardware survey) and the rather large success of the 1070/1080 and 1080Ti GPUs why have features that should improve VR performance not been implemented in Elite?

Elite is one of those titles that is always brought up when discussing VR so I would think they'd want to give it the best experience they can.

Has Frontier ever actually mentioned if they were looking into supporting it or why they haven't?

Since Elite crosses multiple platforms, why would they tie themselves to a single, GPU specific optimization? Just as an example I play Elite on my PC (AMD r9 Fury - All settings Ultra) my Laptop (NVidia mobile and all set to medium due to heat) and my Xbox one.

Can't fault them for keeping all options open...

SMP when it was implemented into iRacing benefited performance by about 15~20%. In VR any performance gain has significant impact on playability and quality.

I'm sure FDEV has the metrics for how many 1) VR Commanders there are 2) How many are on nVidia hardware and be able see if there's a real case for it or not. I'm guessing there probably isn't a strong case considering they've on two other hardware platforms as well and have an overwhelming player base that's in 2D.

Given they're plugging away on a new game on Cobra, I'm sure their engine team are already pretty stretched.

It'd be great, but don't hold your breath.

Implementing this from what I hear would almost require a complete rewrite of the core engine, so lots and lots of work.
Yes it's a Nvidia specific supported tech, but then again AMD hasn't really been relevant this past decade and Ryzen\Vega might help, but there is still no doubt.
If you spend a little more, you get significantly better performance going for Intel\Nvidia.
I would absolutely love for there to be some actual competition in this market again, but so far. It just isn't there.

SMP wouldn't benefit only VR users, but also multi-screen setups, I do remain optimistic.

I'm sure twenty years ago there were similar discussions about why [game] wasn't optimised for voodoo or ati rage or whatever...

But in essence, agree with the sentiment and cynically add that we PC players are getting kicked to the kerb to free up development resources to port the game across to consoles.

EvE Valkyrie implemented a bunch of VRWorks features and it seems to have made performance smoother (though this is by no means a scientific test).

I still think that it would benefit Elite in a major way.

Perhaps they're waiting for an open standard to become the defacto standard? I, as an AMD fanboy, would be upset if Elite would be optimized for Nvidia so much that I had not choice but to stop supporting the underdog.
