Why have that ! in the comms panel?

I mean, seriously, what is the point?

Clear the thing, jump to a new system - hello ! again.

Clear the thing - some idiot in solo makes a racist slur on System Chat - Hello ! again.

Complete nonsense...

It replaces the indestructible "1" that they 'fixed' in the FC update!!!! (seriously)

Yes, it annoys me as well, as does the spill of open players chat into solo (yes I know I can tab it away, but that's only a partial fix)
I think it means that there are missed texts in the comms panel. I'm only in interested in the relevant ones however and it appreas for even npc ambience messages...

They need to stop flagging system-generated messages like 'Entered Synteini' as being worthy of an alert symbol - as every single time you jump one of the chat panes will auto-generate a message like this.

Previously it seemed that if I was reading an inbox message at the same time as a chat message arrived, I would permanently have a ! until I logged out, haven't seen that happen since but now it's even worse as every time I jump I gotta clear that damn !

Perhaps its morse code, not an exclamation mark, in which case dot dash is the letter "a", so perhaps it means "eh" and the AI is slightly deaf. However if you read it the other way, dash dot then its the letter "n". As n normally equals 1 we can safely say we have not eradicated the infamous 1.

Wow...that was a load of crap even by my standards.

I remember I got mocked for pointing out the fact that issue still exists (in Beta, and now in live), just that the number has been replaced by an exclamation mark. It's just as irritating though and isn't a 'fix' in my book. Just got to learn to ignore it - and it can be triggered by system messages from the game (like entering a system, that kinda stuff), not just other players. I'll fiddle around with the comms options later on, maybe it's possible to suppress the issue that way as @Bigmaec suggests.

The subtle difference is that the "1" was for life, not just for Christmas, but the "!" has a meaning (the precise definition of which is buried in a deep vault on Raxxla), and can temporarily be cleared.
