Why have the Black Hole effects been REMOVED? Stop trashing all the good work!

OK, I don't like to be negative, but, yes the but....

I've been seeking a similar black hole to the one I recorded some time ago (37 Solar Masses) for an acid test.

Well I just found one...

I'm gutted, truly gutted, the stunning effects have been DELETED and we are now left with a slight subtle lensing if you sweep past one close up, on the same par as a neutron star.

Why? It was never broken, it was Stunning before, now it is just completely naff...

First it was the skybox, with stuck on dust so the outer limits now have dust everywhere and black holes have had the effects removed.

I just don't understand, why they would trash that brilliant art work.

Gutted :(

I'll do a comparison video when I get over the disappointment

Here is what they used to look like - Epic!

That was then

This is now

Exactly! Who oh why?!?

Earlier I had a great experience with a 15 solar masses black hole & lensing, this week I found a 37 solar masses one too and thought "this will make a grreat video about the effect" - boy was I wrong! :(

I must admit to being disappointed with my first black hole discovery this morning.

Very mild distortion effect but not the epic lensing I was hoping for.

Not just me then?

I've trawled the patch notes and found these in 1.1

- Avoid crash when calculating the star light curve near a black hole
- Fix the case of missing black hole effects when three are in a system and forces background stars to render when the visible distortion is very high
- As neutron stars have their radii saved in km, not Suns, use the black hole size method for them in the galaxy map

Clearly one or a combination of these 'fixes' has BROKEN black hole effects - I'm raising a ticket (TICKET #00000040101), I truly thought FD could not spoil my fun exploring ...

I'm so stupid

Added my original video of a 37 Solar mass to first post

I'll upload what they look like now at some point, maybe later tomorrow :(

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say it might have been causing crashes or problems on some systems.
In my experience, devs don't go through the work of re-coding something without a reason.
Hopefully they will bring it back at some point. I'm also still hopeful that they'll add some additional astronomical anomalies... plusars that actually pulse, accretion discs, mega-flares, etc.

...one can dream, right? ;)

EDIT: ninja'd by nutter! :p

Yeah they must have changed the scaling. I still see them even a subtle lensing on neutrons. Maybe they just forgot to let us get a little close to the event horizon? It would be neat to see a neutron a little closer :p

I was 5 ls away from a Neutron star yesterday in the Orion nebula.

At 500ls it was starting to be darkest like hell and I my pants.

Although I've never been particularly bowled over by the graphics in Space Engine, I really really like the lensing effect they have in that game. They give a real feeling of something special going on. The lensing effect in Elite has always seemed a bit meh by comparison.

I also miss the old FSD sound I can hear in OP's video. I work in music industry and it happens so often that you do worse, trying to do better.
Same case here for BH effects. :(

Big shame they are removed the effect.

If you need neutron stars for a test, try this system.

Should find some... Test subjects there :p

Came across my first Black Hole a few days back .. very excited till I got to it to see nothing :(

It was between two Class A stars, but even against the white backdrop I could only see the HUD marking around it. I figured it might just be a very small one, but was hoping to see something more .. more of an effect. Sounds like its been dialed back or has some issues. Real bummer :( Hope something better is introduced.

I thought something had changed when I saw overlapping distortions from a black hole and a neutron star.
I agree that the black hole effect needs to stand out compared to the rest of the star effects. It's a real disappointment compared to how it was before 1.1.

If FDev can reinstate the effect for black holes in 1.2, so much the better thank you.

Nice video, I've not seen one with some close up nebula to get the lensing on the gas clouds like that - only stars in the black as a back drop (which was still pretty cool).

It would be a crying shame if I've missed my chance :(
