Why I appreciate Elite Dangerous so much

Computer games are by far my favorite form of entertainment for relaxation. Life can often be stressful and so very busy so it's nice on my nerd nights to just relax and enjoy adventures in some digital world that has been crafted for my enjoyment. I've played many over the years and a few games really stand out as being special. Maniac Mansion, Star Control II, Wing Commander, SimCity, Kerbal Space Program, Elite Dangerous. Elite Dangerous, for me, is one of my favorite games of all times and stands with my all time favorites. Why do I feel so strongly about the game?

Elite Dangerous is special because Frontier have built a semi-realistic simulation of the Milky Way Galaxy. The scale of the sandbox that they have built for us to play in truly boggles the mind and StellarForge is a monumental achievement. The graphics in this game are amazing and I have screenshot after screenshot of my spaceships and SRV's fronting beautiful vistas that look comparable to scenes you'd see in Star Trek not that long ago. The game has binary and trinary systems, neutron stars, black holes, emission nebulae, planetary nebulae, planetary rings, and the list goes on and on... What a beautiful galaxy you have crafted Frontier. It is a work of art!

Elite Dangerous is cheesy in a good way. While the graphics are superb and the sound production is out of this world good, Elite has its rough edges. You can tell that the developers of this game are learning as they go and I think that's just great. You can feel the earnestness of their work in the game, and for me that means a lot more to me than a slicker effort pulled off by the larger software firms that maybe don't have that same level of love for what they are building. You can tell that the folks who make this game care a lot about it and I really respect them for caring about the game as we do. The creators respect the fans and players, that comes across clarion clear. Not everything Frontier has tried in this game works well, but they seem determined to keep trying to make the game better. There is nothing cynical in the way they are crafting this game. You can tell when folks aren't bringing their "A" game and are going through the motions. That is absolutely not the case here and for that I want to express my appreciation. Giving your best is never easy. But it is worthwhile!

Elite Dangerous is alive and growing. Frontier are continuing to improve the game over time and I think this game has a long life left in it. There are so many places that Frontier can take this game and I for one will continue to fund it and invest in it because I believe in what Frontier are doing here. Every payday I invest in an item from the store, usually a paint job for my newest ship and it makes me happy to do so and the value I get for my money in this game is ridiculously good. The Q1 Beyond update looks utterly amazing. You can see on the live streams how proud Frontier are of the work that's gone into this release and I can tell you Frontier, we just cannot wait to dive in and to enjoy the work you have put into it!

Finally, Elite Dangerous is also great because Frontier care about the community and they interact with it even though they are often given a very rough ride. They never give up in trying to work with us. People are always going to want more and some sadly will never be satisfied with what has been created up to this point. While Frontier don't have answers for every question, which would not be a reasonable expectation, you can see that again they are making an honest effort to engage with us. Engaging with a community of gamers in 2018 is sadly not as easy as it should be. I love the live streams and the information that you provide on these Forums Frontier, thank you!

Elite Dangerous is something I deeply appreciate. It makes me happy to play the game. I am excited about the game and about the future of the game and today I just felt that I want to express my sincerest gratitude to Frontier for letting us play in their epic sandbox. Bring on the Q1 Beyond beta! RAWR!

In-depth observation of dev motivations I fully agree. They don't get everything right, but ohh you can't dispute their resolve. They want to make this game work, badly. That's why it is so good to play it.

Well said, ED is absolutely a labor of love for the genre far more than most efforts. As for the constant overexpectations, part of it is due imo, to the misleading drawn out hooplah spilled over from SC. Another part is taking for granted the unparalleled achievements of ED so far. It's like Trek's Scotty already saying he's 'giving everything' she's got, when he's already done so much as a miracle worker. ED dev just needs more time, however many more years it takes to crack the tough nuts of the tech hurdles, and to get spacelegs & atmospherics "done right".

Another great unique aspect of ED is the fidelity to sci-fi space travel. It's more living Star Trek than the Trek games themselves. In the TOS, Kirk and crew often had to take days or weeks to reach their destinations. The original Enterprise often could only average about 25 ly or so, a week (on rough average of the writers' estimations of warp speed travel time of different episodes). So of those who complain about supercruise's "slowish" speed or too many hyperjumps, some of them may not be aware that ED is a superb simulation of realism of travel in those sci-fi worlds. Kirk and co. took days to reach Vulcan; the crew had duty shifts where they had to "live out" the space travel which was already going several times the speed of light. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-cOsbIv2iA
Even Janeway's Voyager had to take over 50 years to reach Sol from the other side of the galaxy at cruise warp speed, and the Borg were thankfully limited in speed as well so the federation wasn't overrun in a year instead of granted extra decades or centuries to prepare. And ED trumps all that with the hyperjump. Not a slower hyperspace like Babylon 5 or the older Elite games, but an almost insta-jump of several light years, where now the galaxy is truly attainable in a shorter time. In that singular respect, ED is oddly on the league of a star-faring civilization tens of thousands of years in the future similar to Asimov's "Foundation" galactic empire when it's only 1.3k years in the future. Usually those stories of hyperfuture sci-fi worlds were often about some overall human evolutionary condition, or political intrigue such as the original Dune rather than further exploration of an already known galaxy or universe. Fortunately and conveniently for the game, ED is still on a galactic exploratory stage with a very relatively small bubble of civilization. Exciting times to be exploring the galaxy possibly for decades to come. If ED had jumps capable of tens of thousands of ly, and supercruise could instantly get to any location in a system , then travel and exploration of the galaxy would imo be cheapened and there would be less point of spaceship gameplay and simulation where everyone could travel like a space god and the game would be more approaching fantasy than genre fidelity.

I'm not a very vocal person on this forum, but I agree 100% with you OP.
Well said. Elite Dangerous is a joy and privilege to play and even after thousands of hours it never ceases to amaze and excite me.

This is as good a time as any to thank the guys who bring us this game!!
Thank you Frontier :)

+1 Rep just because it isn't another "why I hate elite" thread [yesnod]

I too enjoy the game, I have wasted many hours playing and will continue to do so for quite some time yet.

Having spent some time on this forum, I believe you will find that you are incorrect as this game is broken and shallow and broken and grindy and placeholder and peer to peer and broken and beige.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you are clearly playing it wrong if you are enjoying yourself. Please move on.

That is all.

Rep coming your way, as i said in another thread, so much hate in the forms I'm happy to see the positive side of things. I play games to escape the realities of life and don't need more turmoil.

Hear hear. I used to love Bethesda games, mass effect, bought witcher 3 on sale... always come back to elite. Every time. Haven't "finished" a game since 2015. Nice to know I'm not the only one who has nerd nights!

Repped.
I agree completely.

I think this project is amazing, wonderful and unique and FDev is a great developer.
I can't wait for ED to be developed further, because I cannot think of any gaming universe with sooooo much potential.
It boggles the mind.

I am happy to be part of this.
