To make your friend(s) miss out and eventually buy Odyssey.

Elite is amazing game but stuff like this just ruins it for me...
But apparently you can both still play in 3.8, just like before.
True we could, but both of us like to play bounty hunting content, and 3.8 has those old crappy rewards for that... so no fun in that if you don't get rewarded for your efforts almost at all.

Why can't your friend buy Odyysey its 20 bucks less than a pizza not going to bankrupt anyone just wondering as that seems to be real issue on this topic? Mow a neighbors lawn or something and call it done. There really will be no choice it will be play together on Odyssey or play together on 3.8 the play together on 4.0 issue was imparted at the time of release.
Let's just say that my friend has health issues that prevent him from getting extra income and this has become a matter of a principle. + no lawn mowing anymore here in finland... no grass to mow
and i just find it disgusting that people would be gated from a content that is free for everyone else but not for those that paid for Odyssey.
Basically you need to ask your friend if they're happy just being stuck in a ship or do they want the chance to shoot you in the face/electrocute you with a futuristic welding torch.
Yeah he would enjoy torturing me... but matter of a principle and we both mainly play Elite for the ships and so on, because there is dozens of games that give me "FPS content on legs."
But there is nothing alike Elite and it's amazing space content, Elite's space combat is just amazing, that's the hook that sink in to me all those years ago, and it's the reason why i still return to Elite time after time.
