I managed to miss Elite 2 somehow in the 90s, probably because I was playing the hell out of Air Warrior and Legends of Kesmai on Gamestorm. Later on I played a game called Independence War 2 and a mod for it called Torn Stars. That was my first experience with Elite, as it was obviously trying to recreate that game with a focused story. The mods for it tried to recreate as much of the Elite experience as possible. I've been wanting a modern version of that game for a long time now. Fast forward to now.
I've been following this game casually from the time it went public. I didn't buy in because I'm not a Brabenite like many of you, and I needed to see some real proof that this was going to be what I wanted. I missed my chance to buy into the last beta because I was busy with other things. However, about a week ago I remembered Elite: Dangerous. I looked up everything I could on it so I could see how the development was coming. I have watched an enormous amount of game play. I have seen and read about annoying bugs. I have seen people have difficulty with multi-player. In the end, I pre-ordered, and if they ran another fund-raiser right now, I would buy in hard. And that statement is coming from one of the most jaded gamers your will ever meet.
The game is a solid sandbox, and a solid foundation by all appearances. Anyone who is a fan of the genre is easily going to get their money's worth. Frontier Developments is very obviously working in good faith to deliver the best game possible. In good faith. Honest, hard working people, working to build an actual space simulation with interesting combat, and in my opinion an excellent, stylized flight model. I'm seeing my dream game being developed in front of my eyes. It's Air Warrior meets Independence War 2, and the best part is that it's not under the thumb of a publisher like EA, Activision, or Ubisoft.
To whoever has the power, this forum is toxic, as most game forums are. What's worse, is that this attitude rubs off on anyone who comes here. The forums need to be cleaned up. You can keep critical posts without allowing such toxicity. A good example of a well run forum can be found over at Turtle Rock Studios, though I understand that that regulating this hell hole might require more resources than you are willing to spend on it.
To paraphrase something I once read, in an online game, the community is what ultimately kills the game. Stop killing your own game. It's fine, and it's going in a good direction. As a jaded, cynical, thirty-something gamer, I can tell you that it'll be alright.
P.S. Did you catch "stylized flight model"? There's a marketing phrase if I ever heard one.
