Why I like Elite and other thoughts, because I really have nothing better to do.

I managed to miss Elite 2 somehow in the 90s, probably because I was playing the hell out of Air Warrior and Legends of Kesmai on Gamestorm. Later on I played a game called Independence War 2 and a mod for it called Torn Stars. That was my first experience with Elite, as it was obviously trying to recreate that game with a focused story. The mods for it tried to recreate as much of the Elite experience as possible. I've been wanting a modern version of that game for a long time now. Fast forward to now.

I've been following this game casually from the time it went public. I didn't buy in because I'm not a Brabenite like many of you, and I needed to see some real proof that this was going to be what I wanted. I missed my chance to buy into the last beta because I was busy with other things. However, about a week ago I remembered Elite: Dangerous. I looked up everything I could on it so I could see how the development was coming. I have watched an enormous amount of game play. I have seen and read about annoying bugs. I have seen people have difficulty with multi-player. In the end, I pre-ordered, and if they ran another fund-raiser right now, I would buy in hard. And that statement is coming from one of the most jaded gamers your will ever meet.

The game is a solid sandbox, and a solid foundation by all appearances. Anyone who is a fan of the genre is easily going to get their money's worth. Frontier Developments is very obviously working in good faith to deliver the best game possible. In good faith. Honest, hard working people, working to build an actual space simulation with interesting combat, and in my opinion an excellent, stylized flight model. I'm seeing my dream game being developed in front of my eyes. It's Air Warrior meets Independence War 2, and the best part is that it's not under the thumb of a publisher like EA, Activision, or Ubisoft.

To whoever has the power, this forum is toxic, as most game forums are. What's worse, is that this attitude rubs off on anyone who comes here. The forums need to be cleaned up. You can keep critical posts without allowing such toxicity. A good example of a well run forum can be found over at Turtle Rock Studios, though I understand that that regulating this hell hole might require more resources than you are willing to spend on it.

To paraphrase something I once read, in an online game, the community is what ultimately kills the game. Stop killing your own game. It's fine, and it's going in a good direction. As a jaded, cynical, thirty-something gamer, I can tell you that it'll be alright.

P.S. Did you catch "stylized flight model"? There's a marketing phrase if I ever heard one.

Here here old chap.

I'm not that much different, however, I did play Elite 2, but then eagerly awaited a modern version. Also as soon as I found out about Dangerous I jumped in feet first as a PB and I haven't been disappointed.

Having said that I, and I think like most people, don't like change, so along the journey to Gamma 2 there've been numerous changes, and in my opinion nearly always for the better, but it does sometimes get frustrating when you get used to a certain set-up, so I think that is where a number of negative posts come from.

Also, in my view, DB and team are still following their original vision, yes constrained slightly by economic/marketing/time factors and also trying to bring on board backer's wishes but I feel Gamma 1 (haven't had a chance to try Gamma 2), and therefore just about the finished product, is the game they want to play. And that's the game I want to play. However, we all have a certain picture in our heads of what something is going to be like and when that differs from reality we may get a bit frustrated and again we may get negative posts.

I think I may have gushed before on the forums, I certainly have to friends who have pre-purchased, that this forum is actually quite positive compared to some I've been on, yes there is some negativity and sometimes outrage but it seems to be handled well by mods and other users alike. It's good to have somewhere to vent and I think if it was regulated to harshly people would just internalise their frustration and perhaps stop playing. Personally, I usually use the forums to gush about elite, ask stupid questions or just join in the with the sense of community, and rarely have I been flamed, unless it's a particularly cringey gush. Gush over.

See you in the void commander

Welcome aboard, Commander!

I've been playing the beta for a couple months as I couldn't wait any longer, and I've already had more than my money's worth. I look forward to playing it for a long time to come.

I agree about the community. It was trucking along great until it went to pieces not long ago. Hopefully the influx of new players can see it keep improving. Some of the negativity has abated; let's hope it continues to improve back to its former greatness. There was much support and advice for fellow commanders, I think mostly due to the fact the majority of the original community was in their 30s and 40s.

We can all work to make this a great game. Steer new players inheritor direction, and go easy on being crappy to each other.

See you in the Great Black, Jikahn :)

What's this? A positive post?

Just kidding.

Been playing since beta2 and loving it. Been frustrated few times by bugs etc. but kept with it, because it is a great game!

This is also my first beta, so iv'e had to adjust my thinking a whole lot to accomodate the annoyances and happy that i have. Makes me see things differently.

And about gamma2.0, pure gold. Game looks and feels even better and alot of the annoyances have been demolished.

So, see you in space, CMDR
