Why i quit...

traveled to the center of the galaxy an took lots of screenshots and discovered 8 new earth like planets
Logging on last week to continue my journey home (more than half way home) only to find that my ship had been mysteriously destroyed...

so, 4 weeks and millions of credits GONE ...and there isn't anything the devs can and will do about it...

be advised that if you keep playing this game, one day you will log in and find that your ship has been destroyed and that all the time you spent on your journey will be lost...with zero recourse.

and to think i would have bought paint jobs for the ships i would have bought when i got back, but alas...i will spend no more money with Elite: Anything.

good luck ...you are gonna need it.

Needs more data. What were the conditions of your log out? How long had it been since you logged in?

Sorry about your loss dude. I take it you parked well away from any planets/stars/asteroid fields? My ship is over 20000LY from Sol, am away from the game for 3 months, have the game installed now on a crappy laptop to check up on things while I am in the UK, ships still there where I left it. I made sure my last system was empty except for 1 star, and I Super cruised well away from it before I left for this business trip. Way too many horror stories, not worth taking any risks

This should not be required. The devs cannot assume that people will be playing the game 24/7/365.

Yes - occasional random destruction of ship on log-in is a terrible bug - it doesn't happen often (when it happened to me I only lost a few hours so it was infuriating but no big deal) but when it happens to explorers and irretrievably destroys weeks of exploration data, it's horrifying!

If FDev can't fix the bug rapidly, at least as a stopgap measure alter the exploration-data deletion so that a support-ticket can retrieve the data if an explorer's ship is destroyed by the bug.

Who said anything about playing 24 hours a day? I installed the game on the laptop to check if my method worked, after 3 weeks it seems that it has. What the Op experienced is a known bug, he can get his money back, but unfortunately his exploration data will be lost.

Ask any explorer and they will tell you the same thing, make sure you are far away from any objects before logging off, especially if you are away for long periods. Hopefully the devs will fix it in the future, until then it's down to us keep our data safe.

Many of us can't even do this much. In my case, my ship was destroyed when I entering the game after the FDev servers booted me out of the game. I didn't choose to leave the game, I had no warning, no options, the servers just spontaneously decided the connection wasn't good enough and bam, I'm gone. This happens fairly frequently, so there is no way for me to be an explorer without being heavily exposed to the bug :(

I have been on a couple of short exploration sorties and was planning a much longer one soon but I had no idea that this sort of bug even existed. I will have to reconsider my plans. To the OP I can feel your pain and you have my sympathy.

Thats strange, my understanding is the bug is due to spawning into a planet or Stars orbit, a temporary connection issue shouldn't cause destruction (unless bad luck in an asteroid field)

It is incredibly rare, I have been exploring for months, every night I shut down the ship next to a planet. It's only if you go away for weeks or months, make sure you are well away from any orbits.

In that instance, asteroids were involved, yes. :(
Not only does this bug make you feel that you should stay far away from anything interesting, but even sabotaging the game experience by doing that - it still isn't enough to save you.

Help us Frontier Developments, you're our only hope!

Why dont you contact the devs and see if they can restore your ship , sins this is a bug? I am shure they can do it

Not had this bug but I did have all my exploration data fail because of problem with my original commander name using weird characters. Suffice to say, after a ticket and discussion I was credited with the cash but the actual unique discovery data was lost. The trouble with your credit if they can't retrieve the data is guestimating how much you lost.

I've been fortunate enough to have not yet encounter this bug, and I'm an explorer most of the time. I first heard about this bug not too long ago, and I've logged out next to a planet many, many times without dying. Since learning this bug exists, I've made sure to log out away from objects, just in case. While in my experiences I can't say that this bug effects "most or many", it is an issue Frontier needs to look into and fix (as I'm sure they're doing now).

Did you submit a ticket on the issue? I know they can't give you your astronomical data back, but they can at least compensate you for the credits. I know credits aren't the most important thing for explorers, but it beats losing everything.

Sorry to hear your unfortunate situation, OP. I'd be upset and disappointed, too.

You're missing the problem. They can and do cover the inconsequential cost of rebuying the ship, but they can't and don't replace the weeks (millions) of exploration data and travel (thousands of LY) .

The minor replacement cost of the ship is worth nothing next to the enormous losses in time and credits and travel. Currently their servers delete the exploration data when the bug strikes, so even the devs can't put things right when it happens.

This is something I was chatting about a couple weeks ago.. somewhere.. in some thread. It was about a guy that logged out in an asteroid field, logged back in the next day, and BOOM... ship destroyed. There this big conversation... half the players saying it is a bug, the others saying its NOT a bug, you shouldn't have logged out in an asteroid field.

My statement / question was... what if you're flying around in one, and you get booted due to a connection issue (happened to me two nights ago).. you log back in, and dead?!? Now.. if just goofing off doing some BHing, no biggy. FD can restore your credits.

If you're exploring... DON'T GO NEAR THOSE FIELDS!

No matter how you cut it, I think it is something that needs to be fixed.

I was in a RES in my Python last night, and my partner pulled out the power from the wall to plug her straighteners in. (Accidental dis-lodgement of cable.)

PC died, instant panic mode as I was in the middle of an asteroid field when it happened.

Logged back in, was a good 2km above the asteroids, so not sure how people are spawning in them?

As a fellow explorer, I totally feel you, OP. I would have been really upset knowing all the time and effort spent scanning stars go poof, not mentioning all the excitement and anticipation of getting data submitted upon discovery of unique systems.

Hoping a break is what you need, and that you may find reason to start playing again in the future
