So I've been a fan of space sims and space fighting games since they started showing up in the 80's. At first my biggest gripe was the crummy graphics, and then when graphics started catching up, it turned to storytelling and gameplay mechanics.
I currently play Elite Dangerous to the detriment of my sleep at times. Why? Because the game has enough different hooks to keep me interested.
Over the years, I have built a small fleet of ships, engineered almost to perfection for my enjoyment and for different aspects of the game. At 1 billion in assets, I have done the 'grind' in various aspects of the game.
About the only issue I have had over time is the sometimes lackluster rewards for effort over time.
But there have always been enterprising individuals out there who find interesting ways to make money after various patches are released.
I never did find myself duplicating the '300 million per hour' promises made at various time in the past, but I was able to make decent amounts of money in short bursts, enough to keep me from getting too frustrated.
Recently I did the Fed Ranking grind to be able to buy and engineer the Corvette which I love to use as an NPC melter.
Then I decided to convert my DB EXP to a stealth ship that runs around 13 or 14 degrees and learned how to take data caches from megaships whch was a lot of fun to learn.
After depleting my credit funds down to around 100m, I heard about passenger missions doing well again, so I bought myself a krait phantom, did my first ever guardian run and got all the stuff needed for guardian fsd booster.
Engineered that ship and headed out 1000 light years to run the 'Krait Passenger Express'. I finally maxed out my reputation with all the folks at my location and am ready to grind out another 500m credits.
After I get done with that, maybe I will take a try at the new mining stuff, or grind out a few more guardian runs and try hunting thargoids for the first time. Or maybe I will modify one of my ships and head several thousand years from sol and see some interesting new places, although I'm not too interested in sight seeing yet.
To me this game is like a river. Always something new and interesting around the corner, plenty to do and pretty to look at.
I can't earn every ship in 8 hours, get a trillion credits in a week or microtransaction my way to the best the game has to offer, and for that I'm grateful.
Things have to learned and earned, and I'm ok with that.
I appreciate the ongoing work and upcoming additions to the game the developers have planned.
In a way, this game is like the modern version of what Half Life was to me in the past. A huge Bang for the buck value that hasn't run out yet.
Thanks Frontier, while I'm enjoying the ride I look forward to what's around the next riverbend too!
