Why I think Elite Dangerous is going to dominate the Space MMO/Space Sim genre

If you find those fun and engaging, then I fear for your sanity. They're so simplistic that they're the kinds of things you quickly put in to test the mechanics, nothing else.

Also, this fully voiced type of mission will be completely unscalable for a MMO-style game that the PU is attempting to be.

They are simplistic but they are immersive, eva in & out of your ship is engaging, fun and dangerous (depending on the ship you can die :D).

A great example caught from reddit:
I had an experience last night that completely ramped my hype and love for this game to 9000, and I thought I would share:
I just recently acquired a Vanguard, so I was flying the ICC missions, getting used to the heavier ship and more powerful weapons.

That ended badly, when I careened into a pirate M50, blowing us both up. Upon respawning, I saw that the Vanguard has a 10+minute wait time. I called in my Avenger and decided to do something else while waiting. This is where the fun begins....

I checked the missions available, and the law-abiding citizens had activated all the comm arrays, so the only thing left was to go to Covalex Shipping Hub, a mission I had never done before. Off I went! The mission itself was intriguing, very eerie, floating there among the wreckage, listening to the audio recordings, and piecing together what happened. However, it was what was happening outside that made things interesting.

My first clue that things were amiss was the satellite link going out. Someone switched it off. I kept an eye on the indicator for my ship, hidden in the shadow of the station, and pressed on looking for clues. I was confident that my hiding spot was secure. I was wrong. A couple minutes after the link went out, I heard the sounds of cannons firing outside. Multiple explosions. The ships of the two others in the station blew...then the hud indicator for my Avenger went out with the last explosion. I was now stranded.

I decided to finish the mission, hoping the outlaw would get bored and leave. After finishing, I made my way out to the landing pad. All was quiet, not a ship in sight. I opened chat and sent out a mayday, asking for a pickup. No one responded at first. Then, I saw something blocking out the sun...it looked like a ship, just sitting out there! Salvation! I thought one of the others inside was sneakier and left their ship far away to avoid detection.

As I drifted closer, I saw that it was a derelict Freelancer, must have been left from the disaster at the station, and it was missing an engine. No good. Then, I saw what looked like another derelict floating to my right. Off I went! As I drifted in EVA over to it, I saw a pilot was responding to my request. Perfect. I would be saved regardless!

The other derelict was a Connie, in decent shape too! Looks like I didn't need rescuing after all. No sooner had I thought that, while opening the airlock, when I heard the roar of engines behind me and the sharp BOOM of ballistic cannons. The outlaw was still here, and shooting at ME! The outlaw, in a Sabre, hit the Connie sending it spiraling away from me. He must not have seen me because he followed it, blasting away. My hope shattered as the derelict exploded. Meanwhile, I saw that the pilot, one Viper_Six was on his way with another Citizen, Arie1100 with him in his Cutlass. I headed back to the landing pad to wait, watching the Sabre prowling around the station like a shark circling it's prey....

I see the swirl of space unbending around a ship exiting Quantum. A Cutlass soars overhead and immediately engages the Sabre. I felt like a fly, powerless, waiting to see what would happen. I hear shots fire, missiles launch, explosions from the other side of the station. What was happening?!? Then, in an instant, Viper_Six appears in his Cutlass hovering over the pad. Was the Sabre gone? I thought for sure these guys would be dead. I headed as fast as my EVA jets could take me to the ship. Suddenly, I hear the cannons fire again, and the Sabre rockets past. CRAP CRAP CRAP I thought. The Cutlass was holding position, turret firing away. My palms were sweating as I approached the rear ramp, and I took a huge sigh of relief as I entered the hold.

As soon as I got in, they took evasive action. I got to the cockpit, jumping in the rear seat just in time to see my foe explode. We were safe, setting course back for Olisar. The feeling I got when walking down the ramp to safety back at Port Olisar was unlike anything I had ever felt in all my years of gaming. Now, could I have ended this all a lot sooner by suiciding, then hopping in my Vanguard to go back there and take care of him myself? Sure...but I chose not to, because the other options were all far more fun and engaging. We got something special here, folks. I can't wait to see what 3.0 adds to the mix.

TL;DR: I got stranded by an outlaw at Covalex. Tried to rescue myself with a derelict. Outlaw blew that up, and I was saved by a couple of skilled rescue pilots in a Cutlass. Emergent Gameplay FTW!

Imo it beats delivering text back and forth from procedurally generated "passport photo avatars".

They said they can do create such a mission in two weeks. So assuming time for testing and all there will be a max of about 10-15 missions if it releases end of 2017. Which means that after waiting five years, you'll play them all in a single weekend. Which worries me: again CIG basically just showed a very small, specific and custom piece of gameplay, and then added the "and there will be loads of this, and everything will be awesome!" message. But thats not going to happen. Either the game wont have many missions at all, or they will be FAR more generic, or the game wont be released before 2030.

Meanwhile, the flight model is still horrible, planetary generation has hardly improved since the previous demo in 2015, there are no major gameplay mechanics at all for trading/mining/exploring/piracy/whatever, never mind the depth promised to each element. Loads of ships dont exist yet, the FPS-gameplay is borked, there are so many bugs just opening a door or climbing a ladder is a serious hazard, there is hardly any AI at all, there is no balancing, no real way to customize a ship, or even gameplay to customize the ship for.

We got one mission, the promise we'll get it in a few months, 'for real this time'. Please dont ask questions or think too hard about this 'progress'. Just clap and cheer and imagine this time it wont turn out to be a bunch of hot air.

2 weeks took them to model that actor saying those lines, after they have a bunch of guys scanned into a "npc database" they can make them say anything they want and move the lips has they want, same with mannerisms and facial expressions.

Just like if they take 2 years to flesh their first system it's not gonna take the same time for every other system because most of that time is developing and optimizing the tools to do it faster and more quality. Same with ships and avatar design/creation.

No. They said it took them three weeks for this mission, but can now do a new one in two.

You are comparing emergent gameplay to procedural missions... You can get emergent gameplay in Elite too either by PVP or against AI. Apple and oranges, SC will have pg missions too.

I hate the phrase 'emergent gameplay', the reasoning is simple. It basically means the same thing in every game. A bunch of ***** go around shooting another bunch of ***** and ruin the game for everyone else. TBH you can take your 'emergent gameplay' and shove it.

At least ED have the SOLO mode, SC will not have that so there you go.

Nonsense. Look at the fuel rats for an example. Just because the term is often used by people who enjoy being a nuisance doesnt mean the concept itself is invalid.

Dominate the market... funded by PC gamers for Xbox players , no doubt, the latter, luv the 'push a button' game :)

Citation required.

The only think that's been mentioned is a PvP slider.

Private SERVERS, not groups. Sorry for mixing up the terms there. :)

From the Star Citizen FAQ:

"Is Star Citizen an MMO?
No! Star Citizen will take the best of all possible worlds, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to those found in MMOs to an offline, single player campaign like those found in the Wing Commander series. The game will include the option for private servers, like Freelancer, and will offer plenty of opportunities for players who are interested in modding the content. Unlike many games, none of these aspects is an afterthought: they all combine to form the core of the Star Citizen experience."

However they backtracked on private servers and modding, so....:\

The PVP slider was dropped as well (AFAIK), as it would be problematic with players doing multi-crew with their sliders set differently.

Interesting. I wonder how they'll manage things instead?

They won't?

They'll apparently have an insurance and crime&punishment system in place, and they'll be monitoring the system for abuse. At least that's what they claim they'll be doing.

I don't believe a word of it. As far as my experience with online games go, most of what they say sound not so thought through but like hasty answers given to create an illusion of competency.

Companies experienced in creating and running online experiences spend lots of time coming up with and refining these systems governing inter-player interactions. CIG doesn't seem to have any of that. I may be wrong though, we'll have to wait and see.

Oh... Darn i didn't know that. :( Modding is understandable though.

Private servers, modding ("using the Same tools as we used to create All Star Systems") are back "but probably not next year". They were two of the original six KS promises. Oh, base Building got added too...

Ofc, and every new feature added in any other space game known to man will be added. Soon you will see gazillion stars PG in superior fidelity. However it will all be handcrafted by Magic Germans.

e: Elite got something that only space engine have right now, a true known to man representation of the Galaxy, we don't need the Universe, the Milky way will be just fine. I for one love that DB are so much into science so that we can actually learn something about space while we are playing the game.

Lost myself on a Moon yesterday. Found a hole and landed my ship in there. Felt alone in the immensity, looking at a beautiful ring planet overhead.

Then one stupid AI had to shoot at my SRV. He later crashed his sorry self on the surface.

OMG EMERGENT GAMEPLAY!?! :D
