Why I will never fly, without the Rebuy!

There I was 10,000 feet... Migs were around me like fireflies...

Wait...

That was another story:

There I was in Branglal, with my fully class A kitted Asp. I have finally reached that point that all Commanders have somewhere in the back of their head, that everything is finally to the point of being able to depart into the black with a ship that can sustain them properly for prolonged explorations in space.

My Asp was up to spec, and ready to go. I had just outfitted two of her smallest cargo slots with a discovery scanner and detailed surface scanner. I had over three million credits in the bank, and my rebuy was covered at 1.2cr. I had flown many times without my rebuy and swore I would never do it again. Sometimes the risk seems worth it and I am always very careful, but I know deep down this is not a smart thing to do. Anyway, for my departure I knew better as I have heard many a Commander fall to their knees in tears over making this mistake.

So, late last night I was ready! I departed Skripochka Gateway with my Asp explorer and had plotted a 50ly course to begin my quest to explore the unknown. I have been out in the black for over and hour doing scans, drinking many Captain Morgans and coke, when I saw that my fuel was getting low. I decided that that next inhabitable system I would drop in for some gas and see how much my detailed scans would net me for the many systems I had just explored. My approach to the system was picture perfect. I knew my line up coming out of hyperspace was going to be spot on. Then...

My little yellow lab nudged me and I looked down to pet her. It must have been the Captain Morgans, or perhaps I was just to tired, I don't know, but I disengaged my frameshift drive a bit late and at some insane speed I became the bug hitting the windshield of an automobile. I was stunned to say the least. Thank god I was a bit drunk, as I just sat there completely crestfallen. I knew I had my rebuy, but all my work and it my my first journey into the unknown. I had been working for over a month to get from my sidy, to my coveted Asp in in one shake of a dogs tail, I was the laughing stock of some crap hole system in the middle of BFE. I did have my rebuy this time, but my oh my was I vexed. Terribly vexed if I might say so.

With the above said, I can't stress enough to those that like taking risks, that it is not just other players that can slick your slate out there. There are a more ways to die in the black, than there are credits in the universe and I found one that I did not know even existed. Rubbing a spacestation and losing a bit of paint is one thing, but giving one a big old sloppy kiss and a million miles an hour will humble any Commander really quick.

I am now back in Branglal quite humble and slowly working to get my 1.2M credits back to begin my Journey once again. Lessons learned--- Don't fly without the rebuy, keep the Captain off the flight deck and never pet the damn dog during a landing!

See you all in the black :)

Solid post, pilot. Good to see you've figured out insurance tiers instead of insurance tears.

I am sure, so have thousands and thousands of other players.

People who we never see writing about having any problems with the current insurance system at all. ;)

Thank you Cmdr!

I learned that lesson back in beta, but I do love that feeling of getting that new upgrade and hanging it out there until I get my rebuy back. Add ditching your shields, to allow for more cargo room and you have a good mix of fear and adrenalin to keep you company in the black :D

Now if only the lesser number who haven't yet could be half as quiet... :D

Really feel your pain CMDR, we've all flown without the rebuy, and it is quite scary.

In a similar situation myself with my Type 7 at the moment and its all on the flip of a coin every time I undock as to wether I'll be flying a sidewinder next.

Have some rep for you loss - and your warning to other players.

Funnily enough I went without insurance twice today.

Had just got my shiny new Python and triple checked that i had the rebuy cost so of i set on another run.

Did that okay then decided to try the next one knowing I was shy of the rebuy and was looking at a sidey if things went wrong.

Got away with it but was conscious of the fact that just a few days ago in a momentary lapse of concentration i boosted into an NPC i just didnt see and totalled my T7.

Not really sure why i took the chance today but hopefully got it out of my system...

:D

That feeling is wonderful though!!!

Thanks for sharing and be careful out there :)

Commander, fully understand the pain. After getting bored of the trade grind I configured my ASP for some python hunting. Suffice to say my combat skills were found wanted and I got destroyed. Was down to my last 1000cr on rebuy.

I had a similar experience with very different effects I have to say.

Finally saved enough to go for an asp, started to kit the lady out whilst retaining just enough for insurance but knowing I would be pretty wiped out if I died with no money for trade etc, but still, things seemed pretty sweet and uneventful on my traderuns - then one journey I exited supercruise on a regular traderun and all I see if a station zoom in at me at crazy speeds and I am just on the cusp of being smashed by rotating solar panels, gantries, you name it. Wine sputtered everywhere as I desperately tried to orientate myself away and save myself from being smashed - should I put all power to engines or shields? I dunno! Panic brain took over and I made it away, but it made me learn a lesson in that you approach the long stations from the front angle - or else you may regret it later heh
