Community Event / Creation Why I will not be Attending the 29th Event

I have played this for a long time like many others. I have had my run-ins with a lot of different kinds of players, PVPers, pirates, traders, you name it I have met one.

And as many PvPers as I have met and talked to, none of them are really not toxic. Generally nice people who just love a good fight.

Well, then there are the others. The ones who band together and think they are cool for killing sidewinders piloted by new players.

I linked up with the [REDACTED]. Good cause, extremely poor execution. The whole thing was a decent idea, get a bunch of players together and move with the VIPs to interdict and cause interference for people trying to take out the VIPs. But then it started to shift over the course of a day or so.

The tone completely changed from "Yeaaa for the truth!! wooo!" to "Get in line or we will kill you", the level of toxicity grew at an extremely high speed, Moderators were more likely to insult you than answer a question that is not on their go to, end to end all FAQ channel in discord. Rules were issued that any armed ship or big ship (Anaconda, Cutter, Corvettes... maybe Type-9 event) not registered as a PVP wing member would be shot on sight no questions asked regardless of what your cause or sidings were because it would be "A waste of instance space for someone more useful". They set up channels to allow players to challenge an assigned proctor to test your PVP ability but most failed or had their ship laughed at without a chance to prove themselves.

It turned into a mess of extremely toxic players that rather see nobody having fun and ruin it for everyone who was willing to help and fight for Solome's cause and be part of a really cool event where players can influence the outcome and even get mentioned in the final chapter of the book. But were met with people mocking and insulting them. It ruined the entire desire to attend for me. I put my Anaconda build in for a request to be evaluated for PVP so I wouldn't be shot on sight. And instead was met with a moderator making fun of it, referencing needing blood pressure control meds after looking at it and having other members tell me to burn it and "Have fun rebuying it".

This behavior is disgusting and needs to be addressed. I understand that players are not something that can be controlled but when it forces players to leave and damages the community and gives it a bad reputation. It needs to be handled.

I look forward to seeing how Drew Wagar's sequel to his ED books and reading it but I will proudly say I did not participate in the final chapter and not associate myself with such vile attitudes and treatment of other players.

... 'cause if i can take one hit from a griefer and get instakilled, i can divert the Greifer away from one of the guys who count... And maybe, just maybe that griefer can't do what he set out to do. Don't forget by abstaining you are taking part as well, just in a different way. Cheers

I don't blame you KillikHiveMind. I also found the tone of that Discord FAQ quite off putting. I have no idea who the person who wrote it is. I guess he is famous if you are a PVP'er

If this event was to try to introduce people to the fun of PVP then, in my case, I'm afraid it's had the opposite effect.

I will turn up to the event in my disposable Ieagle to lend a hand. My name is on the IFF. But I don't have much enthusiasm left.

The whole event was a BAD IDEA™ from the get go.
Looks good on paper, but with the mindset of some, doomed to be ruined before actually starting.

Hope Drew has written a Thargoid-, or "the ones that make Thargoids look like minor incovenience"-, ending to Salome story arc - as she'll be one-shotted out of the blue for sure.

I won't be attending the event because I'll be at work.

Bit disappointed to hear that like just about every combat oriented PvP event I've seen in the last 20+ years, it has, or inevitably will, devolve into shooting gallery for player-killers' amusement. (I still remember Lord British's assassination during an early Ultima Online event.) I'm not surprised. After all Frontier has dragged their feet over the player-based part of their Crime and Punishment system for over two years now, but I disappointed.

I had plans but various elements conspire against it for me - namely the timing, but I've suspected this would devolve into a bun fight at some point... hope its not and some Elite spirit prevails.

Hopefully leveler heads will rule the day. Drew Wagar posted this to the Formidine Rift thread earlier this morning:

I have asked the discord to reign things in a bit. Can't crit the passion, but I do not want anyone to feel alienated.

If you fly a shieldless sidewinder or a modded corvette, you're welcome. Right on, Commanders.

Cheers,

Drew.

Couldnt agree more i was excited to join a fleet to defend salome but read through how it was being exectued and changed my mind.

Ive got my rebuys and have worked on my ship long enough that i want to use it for something like this. Im More than prepared to die trying but the toxicity of the group is frankly dissapointing and childish.

Ill be there but wont be associated with anyone this has really put a downer on what wouldve been a great event.

I wouldnt mind it the fleet dispersment across systems was very strict in an attempt to spread commanders out for instancing but the stance of "if you arent a world class pvper you dont matter to anyone" is ridiculous. The community, especially the pvp element, unfotunately seem to be confirming every "problem with griefers" post ive seen on here.

Worst of all i feel for drew who has put so much life and character into the galaxy but is in danger of being tainted by the toxic groups its spawned

Indeed although this was the response

@everyone crying to Drew because we said your ship will be killed for x, y, z reason isn't going to change anything. If you don't follow the plan we carefully crafted for safety and security purposes, your ship will be blown up. And it will be your own fault. If you want to help, be helpful. Don't be proud and stubborn. That being said, everyone is welcome to join, we're all adults so we can make our own decisions. Just know that you reap the rewards of your decision. If that means a 65 mil cutter rebuy cuz you couldn't swallow your pride, so be it.

This (the response) is why we can't have anything nice. "Adults", yeah right (what a bunch of jerks).

Welcome to the internet. The people with the most extreme opinion/play style/etc. always end up dominating every attempt at open discussion. collaboration or competition. People with a more moderate and open views usually leave because they don't want to be associated with the extremists. (Like you did in this case.)

Only strong moderation can keep the extremists from dominating everything. Usually by banning the most obnoxious ones (like in these forums and in-game).

Given that, I'm very curious how the event will go. It's also a learning experience for FDEV and Drew Wagar I reckon. As far as I know there are currently no mechanism in the game to moderate such an event so I expect a Mad Max style "kick everybody in the face" fur ball. Maybe I'll go there to have a look but I don't expect to be able to participate in any real sense.

I havn't even fired the game up since January, lastest update and all this Salome business is a huge "Meh" for me, no desire to play the game at all, yet I still hope a future update will bring something interesting for me to the table.

RE: The response.

The person who's seized the reigns of this event from Drew clearly doesn't care that most people who will "participate" (aka be blown up by trigger happy player-killers) in this event, probably don't even know what discord is, let alone signed up for YET ANOTHER 3rd party communications site.

Is this what EVE is like? You are a footsoldier who has to follow orders. I've never played EVE because I imagined that's what it would be like.

I still remember Lord British's assassination during an early Ultima Online event.

Geez, I remember that too! I didn't even play UO, but the screeching about that event was so ubiquitous that I heard about it anyway :)

PVP doesn't change much, and people don't either.

My take on this is that the folks trying to defend Salomé etc are probably using the only strategy that they think will work to get the people through alive. Unfortunately they seem to have hired Malcolm Tucker as their PR spokesperson.

Yeah, I arrived in 46 Eridani only to be told that I had to join Discord and fill out a PvP evaluation form!

No thanks, I was just there to defend Salomé and the other fugitives because I liked the story, I wasnt aware there would be bouncers manning the door to this community event.

I politely declined to accept their rules and left to go do something where I don't need to be on somebody's whitelist in order to participate.

Open to everyone, as long as you jump through our hoops and are approved.. no thanks.
