maybe they thought it was inane?

Such as assuming everybody who neg-reps you is an an immature child...?
Well, you just did it, so thanks for proving my point

Oh boy, I get negative rep all the time for my opinion. But thankfully more people agree than disagree so I stay positive in rep. Either way, its just an irrelevant number. I always viewed rep in forums as like being popular in highschool. You can rub as many as you want for points but at the end of the day, those points mean nothing in grown up world.

I'd rather be de-reped and be right than play the popular butt kiss game here and be wrong. The ones that rep down for opinion are the ones that either lost the argument or have no argument. Its the equivalent of a person that uses "whatever" during an argument when they ran out of to back up their opinion.

Don't really care about forum Rep and honestly neither should you. Does it really matter if random internet guy #35621 gives you a thumbs up or thumbs down? Just take it in stride.

There's a rep system?

That was exactly my first thought.

Rep and like/dislike/upvote/downvote systems don't hold much water for me, they don't reflect anything meaningful. It's like one-word answers to questions asking for explanations.

Fair enough some people do like it, but it would be nice to be able to opt out of it (just a profile setting to hide rep tags); let them enjoy their meta game while the other half enjoys actual discussion.

You can hide reputation: username (top RHS of this page)/forum actions/general settings/reputation level/display/hide

For the same reason people don't report crime, they don't want to be noticed. Not everyone likes their feeling/thought public or there would be lots more gays/lesbians coming out.

This has to be the single weirdest explanation I have ever seen on these forums.

I agree with this.

It's like saying don't talk about me behind my back, if you've any balls say it to my face :D

But a lot of the time those replies end up derailing the actual thread. So maybe that's why people don't respond.

I haven't read this thread apart from the OP but I tend to agree that the rep system is a joke.

Negative repping somebody because you happen to disagree with their pov is NOT how it is intended to be used. It should be reserved for insults etc, but then again that is probably the job of the mods.

I have never given negative rep to anyone except those who negatived me simply for disagreeing with my pov. That's an abuse of the rep system too, but I dont really care because it's absurd anyway.

It's not the opinions of others on ED, which i'm more than mature enough to respect.

It's the reputation system, and some posters who cannot take a well-deserved negative rep in their stride. I don't negative rep people because of their opinion, I do it for person insults, attacks and childish behavior.

The posters who can't handle that, and who go through my post history to 'downrep' me as revenge, is an awful system to have on a forum as it's so ridiculously open to abuse.

I feel like i've been a help to people with advice for mac users/bootcamping, joystick selection, general game issues during beta/gamma and i've even hosted a pre-release elite event at a venue because I really love this game, I just can't get on with this forum anymore - Mods have a hard job and of course don't get a penny from FD so should be given respect, but for a forum with this much activity there should be more of you guys.

Thanks to the good people i've met, cheers to the FD team for all the effort on the game, peace and see you in space :)

You're taking it way to seriously. I never cared or noticed.

OP If your life/happiness/wellbeing depends on the approval of others then it might be time to re-evaluate your life goals.

Rep on a forum / likes on facebook / blah blah blah it's all and doesn't mean a damn thing.

As long as you are happy with yourself it doesn't matter what others think of you, especially on an internet forum. :)

Rep is important because...I can't seem to think of any possible reason it could be even a little bit important. It's pixels on a screen and has absolutely no bearing on the real world. Two rules concerning rep on this site: 1.Take it for what it's worth. 2. It's worthless.

I think I've only seen one person with red dots of negative reputation and although it looked like they deserved it I wouldn't contribute. The only thing a bucket load of negative does is to make that person's posts stand out in the sea of green and grey dots.

I've not given any negative, to reward positively is far better than to punish negatively.
I'm not sure why disabling it doesn't solve the problem. OK people can still give negative rep but since nobody else can see it, why does it matter? I just checked, it looks like I disabled rep when I first joined up.

Then there's the PM, from someone saying, OOPS, I accidentally bad repped you, It was meant to be good, I'll rep you elsewhere :)

I've had that. I know who it was, and it's ok, it was a genuine mistake, however, if repping is meaningful, then surely that's a way of ruining someone :p
