Most of scripts use interrupts or pause in code to lessen peak load on hardware. This standby screen might be not necessary on modern hardware but it gives time for game to handle other things in background and there might be code sections with low priority that could use this time to be executed.

I'd quite like to be able to disable that animation all together. Just a layout screen like EDSY would suit me fine.

Provided that I find it annoying, too, there is a simple way to completely avoid it: the outfitting screen only becomes available once the hangar is sealed (same with disembarking): instead of going straight to Outfitting, when I land, I choose the option to get in the hangar first, and do anything else I want to do (missions, contacts, market, shipyard, etc.)
Once inside, I go to Outfitting and look, no waiting!

It being 2024 has no bearing on it. The game is designed to work on rig from a decade ago. 🤷‍♂️

As @HRDiagram says, just put your ship away as soon as you’re on the pad and you’ll not have to wait for the animation. - Especially in Open, no-one likes a pad hogger!
Not that sitting in the hanger frees up the pad for anyone else it just makes it less obvious that you are hogging the pad.

I usually do it that way but occasionally forget and curse myself as the pad retracts, but I don’t think it is something worth the coding time to change yet, there are more important things to fix and new stuff to add first.

Because of the ucking in the dock animation, you know, that animation tha thappens when you select disembark or the down arrow in the menu?

Yeah, that animation, of your ship beeing taken inside the "hangar" is what it needs to wait before opening the outfitting screen. If you get down to the hangar first, then select the outfit option, you will not see this screen.
