Why is Edmund Mahon so popular now?

I've been playing since 2013 and have always been loyal to our one true Emperor, Arissa-Lavigny Duval (blessed be her name).

Why now, is that insolent whelp 'Edmund Mahon' so popular with pilots now?

Have you read the bonus section of the power play board per level,,,
After you have all the unlocked weapons you don't need the others any more..
Hes Alliance faction and offers TRADE item price bonus... the only other choice for this is an ugly old hag in empire..
So you take say a 35 million sale of cargo and add his 20% trade sale bonus on top that a little bonus...
but when you sell 1 billion of Low temp Diamonds his bonus is 200 million in trade top ups if level 5...
Edit Got it the wrong way round he has to be in top place no 1 not you level 5 which is top slot..

Its not that they are as popular like AD is, they just know how to play the game and keep out of trouble.

Cause the alliance is awesome...

I am most definitely not on a top secret mission to steal imperial technologies so dont mind my words given my allegiance...

To quote the profit

"I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land can never be purged away but with blood."

Death to the empire and their legions of SATAN!!!

"20% trade sale bonus"

I can not find a reference to that
Rating/Rank/level 2 power play screen...
Youll get 5 % automaticly at level 2 and as he goes up the leader board it increase to 20%
On your rating/level 5. rare goods get 50% bonus as well...
EawjikxXkAI1R24

As long as he stays in top 3 it increase payments by those amounts...

Ah, that's unfortunate. FD shouldn't have put such OP bonuses for one faction and mediocre ones for others. Powerplay should be a power struggle in my opinion, not a monopoly.

I personally don't care for credits but it sucks knowing there's an overpowered way of getting them.

It's been this way for years lol, I don't think they have ever changed.

I'd been playing since 2013 and the top 2 powers were Zachary Hudson and Arissa Duval. I left the game in 2016 to try other games and only came back 2 weeks ago to find Edmund Mahon as the top dog.

Is he a newly introduced power or something?

I'd say it has to do with the shift in the most effective methods of credit farming. Back in the day stacking massacre missions was king, so having a nice bounty bonus was a sweet cherry on top of that cake. Now mining is king, so the cherry on that cake comes from trade bonus... I do strongly desire a balance between the different professions ingame in terms of credit farming ability, because it seriously effects the RPG part of the game.

You and I both. I miss the feeling from the early days when it wasn't about credits. Everyone in open were just doing what was fun. To this day I still RP a bounty hunter/pirate but it sucks when you interdict someone saying 'your money or your life' and they reply with 'don't you have anything better to do?'

I'm just glad FC doesn't really give any advantage to anyone. People might argue that it allows you to earn more credits, but what are the credits for?

You got a response!?!?! they usually just log out then into solo on me >_>

Mahon's been around since the beginning. The only new power since Powerplay was introduced is Yuri Grom. Depending on when in 2016 you left, you probably just missed Mahon getting to the top.

It's not really about the bonuses they give (Aisling Duval's prismatic shields consistently attract far more supporters in numeric terms, and the Federation has a greater number of dedicated pilots) but about other factors. Mahon's bonus is okay but not all that good compared with some others (Mahon: +20% trade ... Li Yong Rui: +200% exploration and 15% outfitting discount, Lavigny Duval: +100% bounties) and his equipment item is the worst of the lot.

1) There's one Alliance power and four Imperial ones / two Federal ones, so Alliance loyalists don't have to divide their efforts
2) The Federal powers are crushed in the middle of everyone in high-value systems, so everyone fights them.
3) Alliance space is in a fairly clear area at the top of the bubble which mostly isn't of value to anyone else (it's either too far away from their HQ, or they're too busy defending what they've got) ... but this also means Mahon hasn't made that many enemies either.
4) In the early days of Powerplay there was plenty of spare space to expand to, so power size and standing was strongly connected to their initial size (where Hudson and Lavigny-Duval were the biggest). Now all the spare space has long been used up, so power size is much more determined by other factors.
5) With very large powers Powerplay is basically an optimisation problem, and the Alliance are good with spreadsheets. Having a poor weapon is actually an advantage because they don't get as many people grinding merits in highly sub-optimal locations just to get prismatics/packhounds/etc, and messing up their plans.

This, oh my god, this. You have no idea how much trouble module hunters who prepare bad systems give Aisling Duval and those who support her.
