Why is Elite Dangerous Not Mentioned In This Video?

Go and watch the video and then continue reading this.

The list is a load of rubbish as it doesn't include Minecraft (30,000,000 x 30,000,000 metres) or Elite Dangerous ...

So I am wondering why? Why is Elite Dangerous not on that list? It may not have as many planets as their #1 pick (and we're not talking about that game, but why Elite Dangerous isn't on this list), but Elite Dangerous certainly has more square mileage than 9 out of 10 of those games.

So I really fail to understand why it's not on the list. But hey, it's their list and they must have some rules I'm not aware of, and that they didn't state in the video.

I would suggest they are maybe a 'young' group? So not fully versed in all the varied stuff we have had down the ages? Reminds me of this cool pictographic comparison:

They also don't have ED, but could you say ED had a game map? They did do Minecraft atleast (like the biggest selling game of all time!).

Bottom line, any - ANY - "top ten" list anywhere ever is subjective. They picked the ten they liked best.

Why would ED be on the list but not FE2, FFE or Space Engine? They all offer the same galactic scale, yet ED has way less planetary surfaces. Do you have some rules we're not aware of?

I would argue that "biggest - insert anything" is one of the easiest categories to list objectively — it comes down to raw numbers after all.
For something to be looked at objectively, it does need a clear definition though.
If we take a look at one simple definition of;

WORLD
noun
1. the earth or globe, considered as a planet.

So if we follow that logic and definition, the bigger question is: Why is No Man's Sky on the list? Everything else is on a single planet or smaller (fictional or otherwise) — shouldn't NMS should fall under the categori of largest open universe?

Personally I think the video just lacks a clear definition of what it's talking about — maybe combined with what Zak said: yong and/or simply not knowing what kind of games are out there.

nah, IMHO it is about making a list of cool games that have a big play area for that genre. Otherwise you'd end up with a list of mostly dated space games. :p

Space Engine isn't really a game, and ED's galaxy has about 800 times more systems than FE2 or FFE (400 billion vs 1/2 billion).

I was going to say maybe they didn't count games where the maps were proc gen or random, but then i saw NMS as number 1 and threw that theory out of the window.

But there again, if they did include proc gen, then space games would dominate and it would be a much more boring top 10 list.

Likely? because Elite Dangerous is a niche game that demands certain things of players that many people simply wouldn't enjoy? Doesn't mean Elite is bad, or that there aren't enough players, but when it comes to broad appeal, yeah its a tough one. Maybe once space legs is out?

ED and NMS are likely missing as they are both niche games, and also so unfathomably ginormous as to be incomprehensible and so indescribable.

400Bn is a number that no one can easily comprehend, so good luck when you multiply 400Bn by the average number of planets per star.

Too big to comprehend.

I have no time for this. Provide an abstract next time. ;)

I would strike anything using procedural generation off the list, as the real limit of procgen is always "infinite".

Also worlds generated by an algorithm are just repeating themselves with a limited set of templates, so they are not really big or worth exploring.

The universe is built with numbers.

An there a difference between procedural generation and simulation.
