Newcomer / Intro Why is it impossible toi land!!!

I'm getting more and more p1ssed off with this game.
I've managed twice to get into a space station only to find that i can't ing land. I have my gear deployed and I lower myself onto the pad and all I do is succeed in crashing about bouncing off the walls etc..

Do the landing tutorial 2 or 3 tims it doesn't cost you if you explode.

Its really very easy once you have the back.

You can watch Karash land in 23 seconds on YouTube.

Yeah, you have to have your ship facing towards the Control Tower on your landing pad not the stairs. I learnt that after getting really frustrated like you and looking at what I'm doing wrong, rotated my ship around and it let me land finally haha. Just fly up a bit, rotate and go back down and it should work.

Also make sure you ship is parallel to the pad and the landing aid goes blue and ping!
We are the ships that go Ping!
Once you get it you will be able to land on the fly.

Oh yes, I crashed a load trying to land at first. These days I just swoop in and hit the sweet spot without a hitch! Take your time, keep speed in the 'blue zone', make sure you're at the right pad, facing the rear of the station with the pad underneath you. I recommend at first bringing your speed to zero once your display changes to show your position on the pad, and then use thrusters only to lower yourself down and position yourself bang above the target centre, when the display turns blue and starts beeping, then lower yourself down and dock. Once you get the hang of it you'll be able to speed it up and swoop in, but patience is key initially!

1, are you at the right docking station?
2, are you facing the control tower at the docking station?
3 are you level and in the center of the docking pad?

Make sure the number is 01 align with the ship, not upside down, in front of the port come in from the landing pad check the arrow direction. do it with slow speed.
do not rush you can land it.

Some of the pad does not have the beeping thingy just make sure you are align.

If the pad doesn't have the alignment beeping thingy you are either not close enough or at the wrong one

One thing I have found is to remember to adjust your engine pips to minimum as this will give you better slow speed control. Once you get skilled at docking you can ignore this but for early game it is a massive help

pay attention and do your homework :)

Practice is the best thing for this. The docking tutorial is best for that, as mentioned, as its free if you break the ship / get destroyed for loitering / whatever.

The key point with docking is facing the correct direction. When you can see your mini ship above a targeting circle, then you need to be seeing the back of it to be aligned correctly.

Landing gear down. Keep speed in the "blue zone" for best control.

The rest is down to individual preference. I tend these days to come in fairly fast (relatively - still in blue) but a little high of the pad, then throttle to zero just when it seems like the ship is about to crash into the pad. Normally that will stop the ship in the blue area of the target and, if the height is sweet, it docks instantly - if not, then just thruster down until landing (with minor adjustments back and forward if necessary using about 1 notch of power)

I had this problem on the 1st day of release. On the 2nd day I did the docking tutorial in-game and ever since I have had no problem, so that would be my first port of call. - either that or a patch sorted it out.

I recall a couple of times during gamma where I had the ship aligned properly but it just would not dock - eventually had to cancel the request and re-submit, and it was fine. So there was (is?) perhaps some small amount of bugginess in landing, but I suspect it's largely piloting.

It also feels as though docking pads are slightly less "fussy" now than they were before about the ship being perfectly in place. Again this could also be a code change or simply me being better at docking.

Just a quick note. For Outposts that don't have a control tower you can either make sure you're facing away from the blast deflector (that angled plate thingy at the back of the pad) or, when you get the landing assist, make sure that your ship engines are pointing towards you - ie that the assist shows your ship flying forward.

I've found that docking is now a pleasure to do manually since switching to a joystick. Control of the craft is FAR better than with a mouse, much more precise especially with a separate throttle. I've now got to the point where I can land on the sweet spot without using vertical thrusters. I have had one or two occasions though where the pad indications disappear while flying towards them, which can be a little disconcerting!

Thanks for the excellent advice. I didn't even know there were any landing tutorials. I'll get on them right away.

:)

Hi there,

I hope you suss it - I can vouch for practicing, before long you will be doing landings like Han Solo on Bespin.

It is some of the best fun in the game for me TBH: To do a "good" landing - kind of "I wish I had that one recorded using an external camera" kind of thing!

Especially when you catch a glimpse of your ships shadow in real-time, you're like "Woah!"))

Good luck with improving your landings mate.
