General / Off-Topic Why is it-

Ok, so going to get groceries with my wife and a friend today in my slowly dying 18 year old car.

I have to sit in a seat, manipulate controls, and move a machine, with cargo and passengers, dodge potholes and other crazy drivers.
It's EXACTLY somewhat like flying a junky spaceship in Elite, right?

So why is it that all of us would rather fly in space?

Why is an adventure to get a shaky Viper mk 4 with engines that overheat to haul cargo, but going to get sacks of real dog chow is a bore?
Why is it OK to go all over the flippin galaxy to find an Engineer to do an upgrade, but driving to get a new resistor card for the Air Conditioner is a drag?

Somebody, Tom Sawyer me up.

Personally I would enjoy doing all that in a car. I love piloting any vehicle.

But they don't give licences to people who are diagnosed psychos. Who are also suicidal. RIP me.

I've piloted a boat through Portsmouth Harbour. That was fun, even if the owner is someone who... Well let's just leave it at that.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I actually like driving quite a bit. Also loved flying planes back when I piloted a Cessna 172. Anything where I get to direct a vehicle is really fun. :)

Elite is fun (in part) simply because we're flying *spaceships*, and really isn't that the ultimate piloting experience? :D

Actually they do give driving licences to anyone who has a signed letter from yer doctor or psychiatrist that states yer medically and mentally able to drive. Without that note however, ye have no chance. Even if ye do get it, yer gonna have to renew it with a fresh doctors letter every 18 months but its not impossible.

Driving is one of my lifes passions, I love it...and my car. Sometimes I just fill the tank and drive somewhere...dunno where just pick a spot and drive...I find it very relaxing and use any old excuse to go driving. Used to have a bit of a thing fer collecting cars...only Italian cars no interest in anything else non Italian...currently driving a 9 year old Alfa 147. Still original spec apart from the engine which has had two rebuilds and a remap and the turbo is a custom modified BMW turbo. 212bhp, a short wheelbase and a much lighter chassis...0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds, adjustable on the fly suspension so I can stiffen it up fer racing, sports remapping fer faster acceleration but less top speed...

Fair to say that fast cars are my thing...I dont drive fast because Im in a hurry either, I drive fast and aggressive because I enjoy it ^

Maybe its because you don't equate your terrestrial land vehicle to a viper or (insert other ship of choice here) in the Elite universe?

When it comes to cars, I have a specific set of "needs" that MUST be met and then a set of "wants" that enhances the driving experience. Every car I have ever owned always met my "needs". Only 4 of those ticked off the majority of "wants". Those 4 cars made trips enjoyable, no matter what the reason was. The remainder served me well as transportation but were never "enjoyable" to drive.

Find a car that ticks most (getting all is VERY difficult, as well as expensive) of your "wants" and you will find even mundane trips enjoyable.

My real life vehicle is a spaceship, see my avatar. I've always wanted to see if it was possible to make it look like a Star Treck shuttle craft.

Cheers,
Mark
