Why is Maia a death sentence lately

If i go to Maia in open i get interdicted and killed for no apparent reason. Is there something going on there atm? Or is there some clan of nutters controlling the place. Doesn't matter I'll just go in solo i suppose, just curious.

Probably for lulz. People go there for Palin's drive tune ups and might have a good 300LY trip home if they didn't stop along the way there.

Anti-social players tend to hang around anywhere legitimate players might congregate. Solo or Mobius (or similar group) is a better bet if you don't feel like being harassed.

I use Mobius or solo for cg's and stuff cos i can't be bothered with the griefers. But i don't usually get any trouble in open when I'm just flying about exploring or running missions.

OP, it's like being a gazelle in Africa; the lions know you're coming to the watering hole sooner or later.

Pretty much. Maia, CG systems, early Engineers, etc are all targets for griefers. I'd guess that Maia jumped up the priority list due to recent alien activity.

If you see a combat spec ship aligning behind you, low-wake and jump to another system. Either try again or switch to a different mode.

I stuck around Maia after the last CG. Flying around in my experimental Cobra III, occasionally interdicting ships purposely bigger and havin a fight or three. There a people there looking for alien stuff in Open, including those who like to pew. I even bumped into the bespectacled one's Clipper, but on this occasion my lad you survived because I'd run out of torps and was headed to Stargazer (a nice asteriod station). ;)

You just have to be careful. Take on board the experience. Increase your situational awareness and learn to run. Hanging out in a lawless system on the very fringe of the bubble should be dangerous. Develop a drill for player contact, don't be slack. I forgot all this and paid the price a couple of times a few months ago.

But they are animals right? :)

I absolutely think of them "ingame" in the terms of wildlife, or ecology. I never think of these guys as "griefers" as that's far too personal for my taste. Know the risks when going to the watering hole, and by all means, take all appropriate precautions.

Maia however. I've been instantly murdered just for jumping in. Didn't even get to a station.

"I've been instantly murdered just for jumping in" and "Didn't even get to the station" are quite a bit different from one another. Obviously playing in Group or Solo will work to keep you safe from harm, but there are plenty of things you can do to avoid harm in Open, too, but you have to be open-minded to learning how tactically and improving your ship in most cases.

Well, the System - the product of the Great Betrayal of Kaushpoos - is a hated and disgraceful mudhole.
Quite similar to the Founders World, which is a "Failed State" and most prominent sign of the Pilots Federation's utter and complete incompetence.

However... Big however... Maia is Anarchy. Quite densely Player-populated Anarchy, I might add.
Of all the mudholes, this place is one of the few ones where it's completely normal to get shot at or rammed to death. Working as intended, even by my standards.

No reasons needed, no questions asked. That's what busy Anarchy Systems stand for.
Plan & Fly accordingly. A quick "respawn stop" at the edge of the bubble or near Maia is always a good idea. Shortens the "try again" trip, should something go wrong ;)

Maia has always had a reputation for being a dangerous place to go. As you might expect from a high profile, very high traffic anarchy system with a resident top engineer.

Of the 400 billion star systems you have to chose from as a destination in open, I would say Maia definitely ranks within the top 5 most deadly. So if you go there, beware.

I moved a fleet near there lately and it's only 33%, of the time by my accounts.

Like everyone said before. Solo for the hot spots to filter out the trash. Then back to open. Works like a charm. Sadly, that's what many points of interest have become.

But there are good people too on occasion.

I'm guessing you're not referring to Open mode in Elite Dangerous. Because we keep getting told on these forums just how jolly safe and fun being in Open is.

Yes. Yes we do. Hmmm...so Open is jolly safe and fun - only if no other players are around I guess.
Well it's Open. Nobody should be expressing surprise here. What else is it for?

Not surprised, and I don't have any issue with some players ganking others in open.
But isn't there also a potential for people to actually play together in open?

Certainly there is the potential for Cmdr's to play together.
But as seems clear the form of this "play" is open to wide interpretation by many.
Luckily in a PG there is no confusion.
