Why is T7 Large?

So, why does the Type-7 require a large pad, while the Python doesn't? The Python is longer and wider, although the T7 is a bit taller.

Shame... I like the ship. To me, it looks like a cargo or mining ship. But, the versatility of a Medium vessel is just too attractive.

Ah yes the Not so big, big 3. Orca, Clipper and Type 7. Too long, too wide and too tall in that order IIRC.

Per game balance the Type-7 can actually haul more cargo then a Python, has the same boost and is a lot cheaper to outfit. It it was medium size I wouldn't use a Python for non-combat trading or passenger runs.

The medium hangar is only 24m in height, the T7 is 25.4m tall. The Python needs a speed increase of at least 100 m/s, it's way too slow at maxed engineering.

The Python used to be faster, it got nerfed, because 99% of people just flew Pythons.

The Python is still a solid ship and there are other ships out there that really need some buffs from FD (Asp Scout especially).

T7 is too tall for medium hangars... so it's a large ship
T6 is too tall for small hangars... so it's a medium ship
Imperial Clipper is too wide for medium hangars... so it's a large ship

Orca has the perfect dimensions to fit in medium hangars.
Why it's a Large Ship? My only guess is someone messed* the documentation for ship-type certification for lading pad / hangar size

* or maybe some bribery was involved to make sure Luxury passengers dont end up in crappy outposts, but in full size SpaceStations

One of the Class 5 slots could be converted to a Class 4 slot, so it can carry the same as a Python. Then they could reduce its height slightly and allow it to land on M pads.
Then the T7 has the bigger jump range, but the Python has better defences and speed.

Unless you like ships that visually vibrate badly on acceleration/deceleration (made my eyes hurt) and overheat from simply jumping, the T7 is not for you. That and it looks daft sitting in the middle of a large landing pad. Bought one, wanted to like it, tested it, sold it. Ugh.

YMMV of course, depending on personal taste.

I see no reason the T7 couldn't be a medium exactly as-is. Just squish the landing gear a bit when it's inside to shorten it up a bit.

Stats wise, yeah it hauls more than a python, but it's worse in pretty much every way. There's no problem in having the Python be the jack of all trades ship while the T7 is the specialized trader. After all, Python will still be better at mining and combat at minimum.

Personally I'm in favour of making height not matter at the odyssey settlements that don't have hangars, allowing the T6/T7/Keelback to land on pads one size class smaller than they otherwise would be able to. It'd give them a specific niche of being the undisputed kings of small pad trading - currently the best capacity you can get from a small-pad ship goes to the Dolphin for those without access to the cobra Mk4, while the T6 and Keelback would comfortably edge both of those out.

A brief history of the T7 (from a freight dog perspective)

Once upon a time ship purchase price, fuel, and running cost meant something. You flew the Clipper as a fast luxury hauler, full well knowing you could do it a lot cheaper, any heavy damage could wipe out a large chunk of your profit from the cargo run. Python was also quite pricey to run as a freighter.

The T7, had a very good amount of cargo for anyone looking to make credits fast with low running costs. Fuel was extremely cheap, general maintenance was cheap, and any damage from the authorities or pirates would not leave a hole in your virtual credit balance. It all made sense, It was a workhorse, but its only downside was that it only serviced large pads.

Then a small group of people complained about running costs in the game.

Because it would be too dificult to fix (bump Z up by 5 clicks and save MediumPad.obj).

Being a dedicated medium pad hauler would be the excellent niche for Type-7 in this post scarsity world. Python is already good in so many things that yielding the crown in this one role wouldn't hurt it too much. As to how to do it, making the landing gear shorter when not deploying the SRV seems to be it for me. Doesn't the Diamondback already do that? For more complicated solution that would confuse the players, there could be "limited access" state where you can land, but not go inside the hangar. If you log off and reconnect, you'll be outside the station. With my BGS antics I like to do trade with Odyssey settlements a lot, and there's no hangar with those anyway, just pad.

What a great idea.

Just popping in as a T-7 lover, to let anyone who still needs to know that the T7 also has among the best handling in supercruise, making it easier for noobs trying to haul to evade npc interdictions in early-ish game (which is when they're most likely to be flying a cheap T7). It definitely has a niche there. ANd as I mentioned - 3k hours in and I still love BOTH of mine, the "Ballistic Descent" I & II.

I took mine on a shakedown cruise to 'Barnards Loop' shortly after the game was released. One of my favorite trips. The Bridge of the ship is by far the largest in the game, a joy to live in with VR.

Just a shame it is not a good choice as a hauler compared to the T9 or Python.
