Why is the displacement missile not also needed to get the most out of an asteroid core?

I feel like there is a missed opportunity here.
Many people like the mechanics of this drill missile, but you can't really drill anything worthwile.

Why not add some subsurface deposits on the inside of motherlode asteroids (containing the new valuable resources)?
Allow for the collection of an extra 2 or 3 tons from a core, that would be just enough to incentivize the use of the extra hardpoint.

Yes, a subsurface resources 'buff' is very much needed.
The drill missles are a cool mechanic, but why would I bother with them for a fragment of gallite?
Surely I'm not going to waste a spot in my hold for something like that in place of something like opal, or diamonds, or panite.

Not saying that every subsurface mineral needs to be a core-like mineral, but they should be sometimes.
As it stands now, I never use the subsurface missles. :(
