Why is the new Krait so big?

It looks nice. But, going from the cockpit size, it also looks to be much bigger than the original Krait. The Krait was one of the smallest ships in the original game. Often, when encountered in game, it was a ship run by pirates and usually there'd be a few of them working together.

From 'The Dark Wheel'....

"He also saw a single Krait, the so-called StarStriker, a small, one-man ship much favoured by pathfinders and mercenaries."

and

"Alex manoeuvred his tiny craft above the arrow shape of the Cobra, and touched it gently onto the heat-blistered hull. He looked around guiltily. Touching monuments wasn't permitted and the cemetery was patrolled by Kraits, small and deadly security craft, with instructions to blast away any man, woman or child seen tampering with a mausoleum . . . "

Why make it so big? Is this because we've already got a small, fast fighter in the Eagle?

If it was the same size or smaller then the sidewinder, virtually nobody would use it. All that work for nothing. Making it a medium sized is more likely for it to used. It could be my preferred ship depending on internals.

Krait wasn't in the game in first place due of that niche already filled with Sidewinder and Eagle. That's why FD approached it differently, made it bigger while retaining it's classic visual outlook.

Possibly. There are already the Eagle, Vipers, and Vulture in the segment of small ships for several combat roles. From the sound of it, the Krait may end up as an affordable medium combat ship that you can load for bear.

Zorgon Peterson should license the Mamba and make it a Sidewinder sized racing fighter. While not equal in firepower or tank to the Imperial Courier, it beats it in speed and maneuverability.

THe problem is that another small ship would be redundant before they put it in the game. IMO the Krait should be in the FDL, FAS, or Clipper category, otherwise it will be an overnight novelty.

I don't know why, but I think the Krait will have two huge hardpoints, and be like a bigger vulture. Won't replace the FDL in PvP or vs thargoids, but will provide an interesting alternative in most PvE.

Because they wanted to shove an SLF hangar in it, most likely.

Also, the Eagle isn't that small, nor is it particularly fast.

David has stated multiple times that the reason the Krait was not used early on was because it was too small to be useful.
I guess this is a Krait XL :D

If it could hold more guns than a Sidewinder, I'd find a use for it, even if it had similar physical size and internal capacities.

My opinion the smaller ships from Elite and Frontier First Encounters are larger in Elite Dangerous but the big ones are smaller if that makes sense!

I mean I'm sure the Anaconda had over 500-600 tonnes of cargo space in the old games but in Elite the max is a good 100 less and I'd expect the Panther Clipper not to be the big beast it was before.

I would buy a ship smaller than a sidewinder. Kind of like a SLF but without the need of a mothership. I guess it's only real use would be canyon racing though. Also I love a bargain so if it were only 20,000 credits then I would get one.

THe thing about the smaller ships is they very quickly become useless, which is a shame since it would be cool if they werent made so redundant by ones that were later put into the game. Bar a change to the flight model I wonder if reducing their heat output, and therefore their signature becoming fuzzy on the scanner at shorter ranges, might make them a more attractive proposition even for veteran players. Potentially this could mean fliying in a wing of smaller ships (i.e. eagles, vipers, etc) could be effective in skilled players hands. And perhaps also lead to missions where using a smaller ship is of an advantage.

I'm just relieved I'm not the only one who thought it was much bigger than the original.

It seems like a "combat Keelback" to me, for all the god that'll be. [where is it]

Remember Ford Fiestas in the 80s?

One of the best vehicles I ever owned. 1600cc 4cyl 4spd manual

I put a set of heavy sway bars on it and it handled like a slot car.

I wish I still had it, but alas my bride to be totaled it.

The last thing we want is a teeny weeny ship that's a tad bigger than the SLF ...... unless .....

it can be carried by bigger ships [yesnod]
